To teach your dog how to stay, walk him/her out to an open space. Start by giving him lots of praise. Before you teach your pooch how to stay, he must know how to sit. Make sure there is a leash attached to your dog. Put him in sit mode, then say, "Stay, Rover!" or whatever name or command you want to use. Then place the palm of your left hand on his muzzle and keep it there as you walk backwards. If the dog comes, just try again. If you are able to walk at least 5 steps away, praise your dog. Make the time you are gone longer, and try using words such as, "Stay here" or "I'll be right back". Soon your dog will get the hang of it.
Teaching the stay command can be tricky with some smaller dogs, as they love to jump up and play. Being patient and persistant are the keys to this trick. My dog took about 1 month to learn how to stay. So next time you go to the kitchen, Rover doesn't take over. Dog Articles » Dog Training
