Why Do Dogs Get Lost?

There is not a day that I don’t see a lost dog or cat ad on the streets. And I wonder, why do people loose their pets or why does a pet run away from their safe and secure shelter that the owner has provided.

Is it because the dog is not happy with where he or she is living? Is there a better or more important thing out there? Do they even think, what is the worse thing that can happen if I run away and get lost? Did you know that dogs have very sensitive and strong sense of smell, sight and hearing than a human do?  So, with all these sensitivity and all the smells, sights and sounds of our cities, how can they concentrate on things?

The secret is in their brains. They can concentrate on one thing that matters to them the most and fade out all other senses. It is this system that allows the dog to fallow a scent or sight (depending on the breeds’ type: a beagle will fallow its nose …) and fade out all other senses.  Therefore, they don’t think what is the worse thing that can happen if I run away and get lost. They just do what is natural to them.

What is a responsible pet owner to do when their dog is lost?  The most logic thing to do is to be prepared. ID your dog. I mean, other than tattooing or chipping your pet.

Think about it, what is a dog going to do when it is lost. Most of the time they end up on a strangers property, or go to a strangers. Let’s say someone has lost a dog and you find the dog. What would you do? Look at the dog’s tattoo! Scan the chip! No, can’t do, and they don’t make sense to you and me. Then you look for an ID tag, or some sort, if there is one. Lucky you, there is an ID tag, but it is faded. You can’t read it. Or it is too small. And even the dog won’ let you get very close and intimate with. So, the dog is not found for days, even though it is with a stranger in a safe place!

The solutions. COLLAR ID. Personalized collars. They are embroidered collars with the pet’s name and the phone number. They are visible and clear to see and it will make everything easier for the finder to call the owner right away, instead of taking the pet-to-pet shelter, or SPCA and leave the pet there, till the owner is found.

Prevention is the key. Pets may or may not get lost, but if they do, then you know why they do, and if they do, now you also know how to direct them back home.
