Not Designed For Turtles September 21, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
As other reviews have indicated, the mechanics of the filtration system are great. The reason this is an expensive, top-of-the-line filter is because the filter internals are designed to clean the water very well. However, turtle owners beware, the intake components are cheap and not designed with reptiles in mind. A flexible hose connects the filter to a plastic piece that plays an integral part in priming and hangs at the top of the tank wall. The plastic intake tubes that hang into the water from this piece are connected by fitting one inside the other and rely on friction to hold them together. If your basking surface is inside the tank and the tank therefore is not filled to the brim, these connections are exposed and pull air bubbles into the filter. My red eared slider of fourteen years got right to work on trying to destroy the new feature in the tank and I ended up having to permanently fuse the pieces together with aquarium caulking.br /By the way, when clamping the hoses to the valve and other plastic components, you'll save yourself a few hours and a lot of sweat if you use vegetable oil to lubricate the parts. The instructions are also sub-par.
NOT GOOD FOR WATER TURTLES June 14, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
It worked great...until one day I came home and saw my turtle stuck on the filter, drowning. The tube that takes in the water comes in different sections so you can fix it to whatever length you want, with the last one closed at the end except for little slits for the water to go through. However, these didn't have a clasp or anything to keep it together besides fitting one inside the other (which is not secure) so somehow the turtle got the bottom part loose and it fell off, leaving a big hole which sucked up my turtle's leg...she was stuck there for a while and ended up drowning by the time I got home....
Great buy! March 11, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I purchased this filter for my 200 gallon tank. It is working great. The water is kept crystal clear. Another nice thing is that is it a quiet filter, unlike some others that I have purchased in the past. So far so good!
Best Canister Filter in its class November 5, 2007 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I have owned three different canister filters for 2 red-eared sliders. Between their eating and constant defecation, a good filtration system is needed. The first was Fluval and it began leaking after a few months. The next was Cascade and it just stopped working after a month or so. Then I spent about fifty bucks more for the Rena Filstar XP4 and I couldn't be more pleased. It doesn't need primed, works on the first try - every time, simple to clean, doesn't leak and I have had it for over a year now and it still packs a powerful punch, filtering the water crystal clear!
