Default Response to Let's talk about Great Danes

I own a fawn female Great Dane and she is the most wonderful dog you could ever ask for. On May 11, 2005 we had the pleasure of helping her with her first and only litter being born. We were blessed with 7 boys and 1 girl. We still have 5 of them left (which I was supposed to keep only 1 boy from the litter, but I couldn't resist and I am keeping 2 boys), my husband thinks I have lost my mind. Caroline is the name of my girl, and we haven't decided yet what to name the boys. I have told the buyers of the pups that once you get a Great Dane you will NEVER want to go to another breed. I only wish there were more items with the Great Dane on them for sale. I still have 3 boys for sale. We live in NC.

I love them to pieces. They have the sweetest, most lovable temperment ever! I will for the rest of my life always have at least 1 dog of this breed. They are so clumsy it is adorable. They are extremely smart and easy to train. One thing that I never expected was the amount of drooling! Lol...kind of reminded me of the movie Beethoven with the Saint Bernard.

Hi luvdanes04. Nice seeing you again!

I heard Great Danes are intelligent and lovable dogs. I would love to have one but I really can't. Our yard is so small. I think 3 Great Danes will fit our yard if I chop off all the trees. Haha.

I would like to ask you how much they actually consume. Can they eat 20 kilos of dog kibbles per month?

LOL! That's cute.

Yes, they can EAT A LOT. My puppy, I can't even call him a puppy anymore!! Lol. He is huge...and 6 months. His food consumption is going up more and more every day. He can eat one 25 pound bag in around a week.

I've been living with Danes since my husband and I married. He has had them for many years. Although I had always liked them, I never got one due to their short life spans. Although I don't find them to be as smart as my main breed, they are certainly loveable and generally easygoing. They are easily trainable and love their people and most others as well. I know that if our older girl Jesse doesn't like someone, they most likely aren't someone to be trusted. The dogs are pretty good watchdogs and are good deterrants to trespassers although none would ever bite (I hope). Although they aren't as easy to own as some other breeds, I don't regret having them here one bit.

That is a perfect description. That is the only thing that has me a little sad, the life span. I can never get away from this breed though. Beautiful, gentle giants!

I have a black female Great Dane. She's a pure bred that I bought from a breeder. She's 7 years old now. She's quite large for a female. She sleeps a lot more now that she's older and playing less. She was very playful and funny when she was younger. She was difficult to handle then. Danes are great dogs. I would get another one after her.

Default Must Love Danes

I have a three yea old Great Dane named Lucy and she is wonderful. She is the most affectonate dog ever. I agree with the previous posts that once you have a Dane you will be without them.

Having said that I have met quite a few owners that have had a few danes and then couldn't bear to have another one because of how attahed they became.

There are a lot of things to help with a danes lifespan though. Having their stomachs attached to their rib cage is a big one since 1 in 3 danes will have bloat in their lifetimes. Feeding them a premium food instead of the garbage that you find in the supermarket or big box pet store. Anyone ever take a look at the back of the bag. Some many allergens and by-products. Get them exercise and don't let them get too big. Msot Danes like most American dogs are overweight.

Anybody know what animal meal is? It can be any animal inclduing euthanized cats and dogs.

Default Defensive Biting

Great Danes are prone to defensive biting if they are no socialized well enough. Great Danes are definately one of those dogs that you can just send out in the backyard alone all the time. They need to be with their families or other dogs. They form very close bonds with people and need to be with them.

If left alone too much or better yet sent outside and isolated from their family when the family is home they get a little wierd.
