For reasons unknown to me I have a mortal fear of Pitbulls and Rotty's. I have no justification for this and know most pets are simply a product of the environment they are raised etc. But for me I can't even walk on the same side of the street as one of these breeds. My apologies to the original poster.

now I own a siberian husky a big girl and a american pitbullterrier
boy a medium dog.
but a breed I never will have are: rottweiler,mix-breed dogs and

eng.bulldogs are so ugly !
and rottweiler are so aggressive and attack other dogs !
here in sweden we have rottweilers and some of them

Re: dog breeds you would never own
I would not want to own breeds that have issues with territorialness and aggression and dominance- German Shepherds, Pit Bull and Pit Bull mixes, Rotties, Dobermans, Akitas, Rhodhesian Ridgebacks, etc. I realize any dog can have these problems and it's often the owner but I think it's going to the other extreme to deny that certain breeds are more prone to those problems.
I am not an active enough person to where a dog from the herding group would be happy with me.
I wouldn't want hairless or short-faced dogs because I wouldn't want to deal with the special issues of those breeds.

LOL! I thought the same thing about poodles and couldn't believe that a standard poodle was the only breed my husband would consider owning. Now we have 2 awesome 5 month old puppies and I can't imagine a better breed of dog. They are super smart, athletic, loving, and the biggest clowns.
We keep their hair buzzed to one uniform length over their entire body, which keeps everyone guessing as to what kind of dog they are. And people are shocked when we tell them. They don't shed, which is great, but their haircuts are pricey, so I think we're going to try the next one at home.

I had a boxer cross about eight years ago and it was a rotten little pup. Litterally chew me out of house and home. I've had an amercan cocker spanial for over eight years and she's the best dog I've had in my life. Just recently I got a 3/4 Rottweiler-1/4 german shepard and she's been great. I've never abused my animals(or should I say my kids) and they don't get overfed either. I really hate to hear the stories I hear about Rottweilers having to be put to sleep or killed because some idiot hasn't kept control of their animals.

I would never want or own a Chinese crested. They're ugly. I like Chihuahuas but they are to yappy to have. I also wouldn't want a poodle or Russian sheepdog. I would actually love a beagle, or yorkie, and ....

I myself am a number one Mutt lover, so i will always love those dogs, plus the very large dogs.
I really dont like dogs that are small because they are so dang delicate, when ppl tell me I want a tiny tiny dog, one that never grows... I tell them I got some rats that will fit your description... cuz tiny tiny dogs arent dogs to me. I dont like maltese dogs, chihuahuas, shih tzus, poodles i reallllly dont like, and so on.
I absolutly adore Mastiffs, Bullmastiffs, Neopolitan Mastiffs, Dogue de Bordeax, basically all the mastiff breed. I love Irish Wolfhounds, Great Danes, Dobes, GSD, Leonburger, Rottweilers, Bernese mountain dogs, and so on. I lovee big dogs.

Mutts Rule!
Thank God for mutts! I have a mutt and she is great! I like Pure breeds too but if you like two or more types of breeds without the health concerns then Mutts are for you. I don't like the hariless dogs. Or the dread lock ones. (Puli and the komondor (sp?).
I like most of the Breeds out there, just not the weird looking ones.
I think that Pitts, Rotts, Germans, and other breeds have been put in a bad sopt light due to all of the media coverage of the dog fighting and attacks.
ALL DOGS BITE! You just don't hear about little dogs because "they are small and cute and don't know any better!" BS! A lot of these attacks happen because the owners did not properly socialize the dogs when they were pups. Or they were abused and trained to kill.
But banning breeds won't make the problem go away. That is like banning a certain group of people because they are more agressive and violent.

Very interesting thread! The misconceptions about various breeds never cease to amaze me.
Growing up we had several purebreeds....springers, dobermans, shelties, yorkies, maltese and then several mixed breeds in between. Of those, the only one I would never own is a springer.
As an adult I have owned Shelties, Great Pyr's, Newfies, Rat terriers. I currently own A golden Retreiver, Goldendoodle, and a Standard Poodle. Of those, the ony one I would never own again is the Rat Terrier.
I can tell you that if anyone had told me 5 years ago I would own a standard poodle, I would have said they were nuts. I only had the image of the Fru Fru dog prancing around. OMG was I so very very wrong. They are incredible dogs! Excellent hunters, and they are scary smart! As a trainer I see lots of different breeds come through my classes. They all have their faults, most of which you can train through, but some that can't be. The biggest problem I see is the owners who are clueless and either 1) coddle thier small dogs creating "small dogs syndrome", or 2) not taking the leadership role with their dogs. Dogs instinctually follow the leader of the pack, and if there isn't one, then they'll gladly accept the job. But just like people, all dogs are not born leaders.

Ummmmmm I wouldn't have a small dog purely for the fact that I would be scared of hurting it - they are so small and delicate looking, I'd be frightened. I really do like big dogs, but maybe that's becuase I've grown up with them.

I DEFINITELY would never own:
A Lab: too greasy and retardedly happy . . . many have issues with "personal space", they also shed way too much
A Beagle: too greasy and loud and food obsessed
Any Spaniel: they get lumpy and warty when they age and I seriously get nauseous when dogs get warty, I also don't like the hair.
English Bulldog: even though I love them I have yet to meet one that doesn't have at least one big medical problem (skin, eyes, breathing, luxating patellas, etc etc etc), but they usually have more. It kills me because I LOVE their temperment just can't deal with the medical BS
Breeds I PROBABLY won't own:
Anything that has loads of fur, slobbers, or is small.

I Do own or have owned/fostered= Renascence Bulldogge (best darn dog ever!)-own, English Bulldog - owned ATB Jan 2005, Damlatian - owned ATB July 1997, Basset Hound-fostered, Basset/Beagle mix-owned and fostered, Boston Terrier (terrorist lol)-fostered, Rottweiler-fostered, Pit -fostered and several Pit mixes-owned and fostered, Labs-fostered, Lhasa Apso/Shih Tzu mix- owned ATB Sept 1995, Heinz 57 Mutt-owned and fostered.
Breeds I wouldn't own= pretty much nothing... If one came along that needed a home and I had the means to care for it - I would. I don't particularly care for those yappy little ankle bitters, but if one needed me - I'de be there for it.
There are alot of misconceptions about the bully-ish breeds. They are some of the most loving and loyal breeds out there. There is alot of talk about not trusting a bully around thier children, but to be honest, I would trust a bully before I would trust a cocker spaniel, lab or any of the little dogs. It should be common scence to NEVER leave a dog (regardless of breed) unattended with a child. A good majority of the dog bites (again - regardless of breed) are a result of parental negilgence. You can't blame the dog for being a dog. Quality breeding and responsible, educated ownership make for good dogs.

I would never own a small dog. Just not a fan of most of them. I don't really like the dogs that have lots of hair, and take a lot of maintenance, even though I am considering a Bouvier.
Other than that there aren't many dogs I wouldnt' have. I love most dogs. Each breed has something to enjoy IMO.

I don't care for the more agressive breeds because I have children. Anything pitbull or rottie. I DEFIANTLY would not own one of those chinese hairless looks like it was born in the green goo at the radioactive plant dog. Those poor thing have been breed the wrong way to make a dog have its tongue hanging out and eye problems and no fur is just wrong.

Scaird of Dobermans and Pitbulls
I love a good medium sized dog. A few years back I got 2 Standard poodles and I was amazed at how wonderful they were. I fell in love with the breed. It was a turn around for me as I had never wanted anything to do with poodles. Pitbulls and Dobermans scare me. I was almost attacked by 4 Dobermans (guard dogs) while living in Peru. They scare me a lot!

So much depends on your experience with the breed or even just one dog. I have never met a rottie that didn't think it was a lap dog - whenever I see one walking towards me they make me smile with their big grins and wrinkled faces. But I really feel uncomfortable around border collies and, even though I love their looks I have never met a Cocker spaniel with a personality!
But it's all academic anyway - I doubt I will ever own anything other than a Jack Russell!

If you’re planning to breed your dog or cat so your kids can “witness the miracle of birth,” make sure you take them to the local pound so they can witness a healthy, adoptable animal being killed with a lethal injection of sodium pentobarbital or worse, gassed to death, too, so they’ll understand exactly how 50% of those ‘miracles’ end up in the US

Hmm yes interesting thread indeed. Someone mentioned that while they have preferences, if any dog needed them they would be there for it. I thought about it and I would like to believe that I would be that way but in reality there are thousands of dogs out there that do need someone right now... I can't take care of them all, in fact I can't take much more than the two I have at the moment, but hopefully my situation wil change and I will be able to open my home to more dogs in the future. Even when that happens I'll still have a choice as to which one(s) I will accept in and will have to find the right dog for me.
That being said, I think I would never own a dog with a "smushed" face. Bulldogs, pugs, boxers, etc, I just don't get it. To me, dogs are not supposed to be born with under bites and a face shape that does not promote proper breathing, or eating it just goes against nature. If all of a sudden people stopped breeding dogs and just let them interbreed I'm pretty sure the "smushed face" look would be gone in a matter of a few generations... it's just not natural. Therefore I have to apologize to all bulldog/pug/boxer lovers for this next line, but I truly believe the standards for these breeds should change. I know that a lot of people fall in love with the personalities of these breeds, but for me it just doesn't make sense for them to exist in the way they do now. SORRY! I had to say it, I don't mean to open a can of worms here or offend anyone, it's just my opinion.
