Default small dog- non barker

I have a friend at work who is looking for a small breed dog that is not much of a barker. She is willing to look into anything it just needs to be less of a hyper little one. Any suggestions? By small we are talking about the size of a Yorkshire or a Bichon.

Oh, 'til you said how small, I was going to say a Basenji, because they don't bark. But Basenjis are bigger than that.

get a westie, my friend has just got one and they never bark and you can leave them alone and they will be fine or you could play with them all day long and they still are fine

I was gonna say Lhasa Apso but they far bigger than Bichon Frise and Yorkie.

Not a Miniature Pinscher too! We had one..he was not much much or a barker...but he was overly hyper! But we loved him so much. Sadly, we lost him.

Talking Get a Pekingese

My little Peke is the best dog I have ever had. He was a rescue and he is very quiet. He will bark if he hears a dog bark on TV, (We watch a lot of dog shows on AP and The Dog Whisperer) but that is all, and he can be distracted from that real easy. They are gentle and rarely hyper.

The few Papillions I've known were not yappers, but many dogs become nuisance barkers because the humans allow them to! The Coton de Tulear is a relative of the Bichon Frise, I have seen many Cotons at dog shows recently and rarely hear them bark. Tibetan Spaniels are also delightful little dogs. The Havanese is another Bichon relative, although I have never met one in person.

A lot also depends on how much time your friend wants to spend grooming or taking the dog to a groomer.

Typically vocal small dogs are: Dachshunds; Miniature Schnauzers; Miniature Pinschers; Chihuahuas; any type of terrier which includes toy terriers such as Brussels Griffons, Affenpinschers, Toy Fox Terriers, Rat Terriers ect. And Yorkshire Terriers ARE also terriers.

Check out my reply on our Shiba Inu. This could be the dog for her.

BTW, the females are smaller than the males; they are about 13.5 inches tall and about 23-24 pounds.

I have a friend with a Boston Terrier who hardly ever barks. When he wants to be let out he just softly whimpers.

Most of the bracycephalic dogs are not barkers. Pugs, Japanese Chins, Pekes, also the Cavaliers are not usually too vocal. Some papillon lines are very sensible, but the wrong family means a yappy dog. Minpins are notorious barkers, most terrier types are. Schnauzers can be extremely mouthy.

My chin never barks but sometimes she "talks" to people (like huskies) and is a total sweetie pie.
She loves people(almost too much ) loves small and big dogs (she lives with 2 big labradors) and became potty trained in a month (she's only 3 1/2 months old).
