What a terrible shame! Bone cancer is incredibly painful. If it can be bred into these dogs, why can't it be bred out?

I'd assume it could be bred out, but you've got to remember, there are a lot of irresponsible breeders out there who don't car about anything but selling the pups and making money. Also, think about the puppy mills.

I can't think of too many things more evil than to breed dogs that one knows have a strong disposition to bone cancer. It is a terrible way for a dog to end its life and also very painful for the parent. Why aren't breeders more closely regulated? Things like this shouldn't happen.

I agree. I know this is kind of offtopic, but same goes with tabacco companies. Why would they sell tabacco to people if they know it causes all sorts of health problems including lung cancer??? Some people just flat don't care. They're in it for the money and don't care about anything or anybody but themselves.
In puppy mills you better believe that inbredding is VERY common. As long as this produces a pure bred dog they don't gave a crap what health problems the dog may pass along. I'm sure there are some breeders like this too. Sick, sick people I tell ya...

In a strange way, the tobacco industry makes sense to me. Here in Canada the government makes an incredible amount of money from the multiple taxes on cigarettes. I would assume it works like that in many countries. While governments will scream bloody murder about second hand smoke, lung cancer etc., no country will ever ban tobacco because it is just way too big of a "cash cow." You know it isn't the people who grow the stuff who are getting rich off of it!

It makes sense on an economical standpoint, however the fact of the matter is tabacco can eventually kill people and cause them to aquire life threatening diseases.

Agreed. However, the older I get, the more I realise that our governments do not serve the people. It's all about the money.

Sorry to hear of this. Lou sure was a sweet-looking dog-You can tell by the pic you posted--the eyes. I know you are missing him really bad but take comfort in the thoughts that you will see him again when you meet at the 'gate.'

It is indeed. Unfortunately though, it is reality.

I'm worried the end may be coming soon for her, but we have tried to make her as comfortable as we can and make sure she maintains a high quality of life. Have any of you owned a rottie (or other dog?) who had cancer?

I don't have one . Yes, research shows that the cancer rate is higher and as much as possible there should be preventive means in fighting cancer.
By the way, may I please ask what were the symptoms you noticed?

Maybe you should check the radiation levels in your area. There are online website that will show your area level. and even an iphone app called
"rad alert" thats completely free!
hope this helps.

Bonnie would have given her life for us and today I had hers taken away. I feel like I've betrayed her and given a sentence to something so trusting and loving who only wanted to be with us. It isn't what she deserved.
I thought that she had done her other second cruciate ligament, having done her right back leg 2 years ago. I was all set to go through with fixing that. It wasn't the case. It turned out that she had fractured her other back leg due to advanced bone cancer.
It wasn't broken but she couldn't walk on it. The vet offered amputation with little chance that the cancer had not already spread to the lungs; though x-rays showed no sign off it presently. They offered chemo but my mum went through chemo and didn't make it. I know from that how draining it is.
Bonnie was only 8 years old which seems to be a common age for this.
The vet offered to let us take her home to think about it but it has co-incided with a frantic week and we would have left her all on her own.
I felt that was the only decision I could really make at the moment and that I could manage. Had it been different I would have spent some more time with Bonnie first.
I hate cancer.
I was there with her when she was put to sleep. I would have wished for anything else. I didn't like to do that to her; it just wasn't right.
She was a great companion for dad also and she gave it all just out of love.
But she is gone now and I decided and there are no more choices anymore in the matter. She deserved more.
