Default pedigree naming

Hi. I just purchased a new Rotweiller puppy. I have never owned a dog that has a pedigree before and have no idea as to how to go about naming my puppy. Am I supposed to tie in her dam and sire's names into her registered name? Is there a "proper" way of doing this? Thanks so much for idea help!

Hi and Thanks. I purchased my new little girl from a reputable pet store. She came with her pedigree papers and the name and address of the breeder. I don't have a telephone number or email for the breeder but do have the address. I suppose I can write him, I just don't know how long I have before She should be registered with her name. I will continue to research though and I appreciate all your help alot.

Well, first of all, there is no such thing as a "reputable pet store". Pet store puppies come from puppy mills. That is a very sad truth! If you want more info on that, let me know. AKC registration means nothing unless you're planning on 1) breeding (which you're not or you wouldn't have purchased from a pet store or 2) planning on participating in AKC related events such as agility, rally O, etc.

Obviously you don't plan to show your puppy, or you wouldn't have bought from a pet store. In that case, it doesn't matter what name you put on the papers. Well, even if you were showing it wouldn't really matter. You can go online to the AKC website and register your puppy with a name as simple as Bob if you want. It's really up to you.

Sorry to inform you but their is no such thing as "reputable pet stores" they get pups from mills and peddler.

At any rate there is no specifc way you have to name her. You can name her whatever you want. Usually when you buy a dog from a breeder they already have the registered name and you just pick the call name. But since thats not the case you can be creative and name it how ever you like. What registry and she registered with.

When I name my pups I will usually stick to line names or family names and other times I just pick what fits and my husband likes to come up with creative names.

Thanks for the lesson but its not needed. I have seen petsmart adoption days and my husband used to work at petco so you really don't need to tell me. Petsmart and petco are not stores selling dogs they are stores which allows the adoption of dogs through agencies to take place on their store grounds. Pet Stores that sell dogs are totally different and I haven't seen a reputable one yet. Petsmart doesn't have puppies for sale, agencies (like Humane Society) adopt dogs out at petsmart, therefore you are not buying a puppy from Petsmart and they are not "there dogs and puppies". If a pet store like this one is where this person ADOPTED their dog that is totally different. I'm sure there are some other smaller ones that don't sell dogs and work with shelters in adoption.

Oh, my mistake sorry! I forgot that they adopt not sell! I had a Shih Tzu for 6 yrs until he died a yr ago of diabetes. We put him out of his misery! Well, my cousin got him from a petstore that breeds them there and he truned out to be fine. Except for the fleas, which Frontline helped out. That was in Fl.

No problem I was just saying the difference. But also I wouldn't be to sure how reputable they are. You might want to rethink that. While it is their policy on the adoption of dogs and they are doing a good deed, they do sell other animals and don't keep them properly.

They do sell animals as a business.

They sell to just anyone, since its a business they don't care what type of life the animals get.

Most people who work their are boneheads and don't even know their own depart.

When my husband worked there it was over 10yrs ago or whatever but nothing much has changed. When he was there they wanted to put water dishes in with the Day Geckos who won't lap up water. They had a lot of stupidity with the reptiles and fish. This is just one example of stupidity. I have been in many petsmarts and petcos both and most people there are stupid when it comes to animals and most are all kept the same. Inproper conditions, inproper temperature, fed improperly and they don't know what they are talking about when you ask them a question.

The most recent one I went to was a petsmart in TX and there were kids working there 16yr olds who didn't know anything. I mean in the whole store. I was only in there about 20minutes or so but didn't see a single adult worker. 3 different people were complaining about their fish. One had them die at home (which could be their fault) but a boy working there was trying to catch some and they kept dying. He told the girl who was wheeling a cart and she said yeah I know its weird it kept happening to me yesterday. Then another guy was there with his grandma and they had got her a couple fish. But they were coming back to the fish section because he asked his Grandma if she wanted different fish because these look sick. They do not properly keep the retiles either and its very sad.

It is also the samething if you have ever seen Wal-Mart's fish section, not some place I normally visit but I was in a pinch and needed a fish for my snake and went to get one. They had brackish fish in with fresh water fish, the fish had ick and other problems, they had aggressive in with passive ones who were being picked to death, they had incorrect filtering systems, they have tropical fish in cold water, ect. Basically I'm surprised they were even living, but its no wonder there were lots of floaters, dead ones caught in the filter and most looked sickly.

We also went to another local pet store just to check it out. Very sick how they keep the pups in tiny cubes and the reptiles fed the wrong thing and not in the right temps and the ones that need humidity didn't have it either. They had a very large red tail in a tiny cage and 2 ball pythons in an tiny cage as well. The Bearded Dragons had soars. The fish were kept improperly just like any other. Most pet stores I've seen are bad. I've seen a few that are reputable but most of those are private owned and specific they don't deal in diverse animals. They don't do it as a major business, just as a hobby with a store front.

I love all animals and hate to see any suffer and while we deal mostly with dogs now my husband used to breed herps, do reef systems and aquariums among other things so of course it fustrates him to death how these animals are being treated. If you can't properly keep them you shouldn't have them whether you are the one selling them or the one buying them. Its like my Aunt feeding her sugar glider corn pops? OMG that is do wrong! Hubby was thinking of getting a mangrove in a few months but with the humidity they need he decided against it at this time and will just get another white throat. Its called making responsible choices for the wellness of the animals, but basically petsmart and petco and other pet stores are about the money they don't really care. I will not buy from a pet store only a specialized reputable breeder no matter what animal I'm getting.

Your cousin got the shih Tzu at the petstore? The one that died and had diabeties? If the dog had diabeties it wasn't fine. Thats a health problem. Sometimes you get lucky from a petstore just like a byb you might get a dog with minimal health problems and it got good genes but the percentages of healthy dogs coming from pet stores is very low. Its not impossible, but very unlikely. I've seen a lot with health and temperament problems. I've seen a few that were relatively fine.
