What about grooming?? do you want a short haired dog, long haired, indifferent?? Some breeds are great for appartments,a nd amazingly enough, the larger breeds do great! For instance, greyhounds are great apartment dogs, and quite the couch potatoe! As well as Borzois, Danes, St. Bernards, Rottweilers ect...As long as they are able to get out and burn energy daily, they do just fine! I would suggest taking a look at your local shelter or on Petfinder.com: Adopt a pet and help an animal shelter rescue a puppy or kitten. you can find many breeds available, that are suited for you lifestyle!

I personally like terriers for apartment living, had one in a small apartment for years, and had loads of fun!

It is a huge miscoception that huge dogs done do well in apartments! they actually do very well! Especially Danes, they dont require as much excersise as say a Border Collie. they love to be couch potatoes, and do well on just a couple hours of excersise!

boxers......they are awesome dogs.....smart, excellent with kids. I dont think i will ever have another dog. Be careful of cardiomyopathy and hip dysplasia, etc. By any pure breed dog from a reputable breeder, not a pet store in a mall.

I would recomend a rottweiller. These dogs don't mind their owner being gone, love to exercise, are not hyperactive, and are not excessive barkers. A great dog for an apartment. They also can protect your apartment from any burgulars.

Well then a medium to large dog is for you. What about a border collie or better yet a labrador retrever. Labs love most animals including cats. They tolerate you being gone for a moderate amount of time they love to run and play and are less risky then most other breeds.

An older shelter dog. It does not necessarily have to be a senior, but usually with the shelter dogs, they are used to cats, need a good home, and are generally behavior trained. I have 3 senior shelter dogs, 1 3 year old shelter dog, and two cats. The dogs do not even pay attention to the cats, they are the best behaved dogs i have ever seen and they are already potty trained. These dogs need a good home and a few of our friends got puppies and younger dogs and they are so frustrated by the amount of work it is to keep up with them chewing, etc. whereas our dogs are so good. Hope this helps. I love my dogs more than anything and wouldn't trade them for a puppy for nothing! I have a lab/dane mix, an australian shepherd mix, and two chihuahuas. After adopting one and falling in love, we just kept going back for more, because they are the best dogs ever!

Please consider adopting a retired racing greyhound. They are placed in foster homes prior to adoption so they can be tested out for cat-compatability. I have one, and he gets along fine with my two cats. They are great apartment dogs, need very little exercise, shed very little, and don't have a doggy odor. Plus, they are very sweet and affectionate, and are well-socialized with other dogs. Go to fastfriends.org to learn more. I wouldn't torture a border collie by keeping it penned up in the condo-- they are very active dogs who "need a job" to keep happy (like herding sheep or agility training).

labrador retriever, but watch out if you get a puppy, they aren't completely emotionally mature until 3 years. i have a 2 year old that is completely lazy and sleeps all day, but goes absolutely nuts when i play with her. great dogs though, really!

Well I'm giving a very biased answer because my family breeds them, but I am simply infatuated with German Rottweilers !

They are simply adorable as puppies, and grow up to be such loving, caring, playful, loyal companions. And contrary to some beliefs, they are great around cats! . We've sold quite a few into cat households and the owners tell us all kinds of stories of how they play together.

And I just have to share this incredibly adorable picture of one of our puppy girls. :-D

I second an x-racing Greyhound. They ARE greyt companions in homes and apartments. They are low shedders, clean, energetic and lazy all at the same time. Their slogan is "40mph couch potatoe". Our Grey loves his 20 min walks (one in the morning about 7 and one when I get home about 5:30) and he is quiet and content during the day when my husband and I are at work. We live in a 1300 sqft condo with a 12 x 20 ft yard for him to chill in. He lives with us and our Shep. The other nice thing is that Grey's are kenneled when they are not eating, bathroom break, racing or training so if you want to kennel you wont have to train them. If you don't want to kennel that is fine to. Ours has the run of our place and he is great...well except he loves our shoes so those have to be locked up...but other than that we don't have to worry. Depending on the Grey's age and health, walking is all they would need like ours (cause of his gimpy foot due to a racing accident) or a dog that you can jog with. Just a suggestion. Good luck in your search.

Smile Respond to suggestions for a dog breed

I particularly like Great Pyrenees. They are a large breed and a great family dog. They are polite when visiting friends. They are long haired but do not shed a great deal although they need frequent grooming. They are a people dog and loyal. They want to be with you at all times. I can send you a picture of my Sadie if you like!!
