what is the most mild mannered breed of dog?
I currently have a 6 month old male rottie, and I want to get another pup. I'm looking for a breed that is excellent with kids, very laid back and mild mannered. The only breed I can think of is a lab.. But they aren't very laid back (most of them are pretty active). Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Labs are nice. But a little hyper. I personally think St. Bernard's are the most relaxed dogs out there. They're really sweet dogs.

Great Dane if you like big dogs... Golden Retrievers are great people dogs, but they can be hyper too. For little dogs, Bichon Frise. Standard Poodles are great too, and they look like regular dogs if you don't do the goofy show cut.

Boxers are great with kids. We've always had boxers growing up. Contrary to popular belief it isn't the small dogs that are best with kids. They usually can't tolerate small children at all. My mom has a 5 year old and he lays all over their boxer and the dog doesn't care. She's really gentle. She'd get up and move before she would ever nip or growl at him.

Our labrador became laid back when she became an adult. She's active when she's out of the house but just lies around and follows me where ever I go when she's inside. She's great with little kids, my nephew even uses her as a pillow and she doesn't mind. In my opinion, Labradors are the best.

I would think that a golden retriver would be just what you need.

Greyhounds (believe it or not) are very sweet, mellow dogs...they are regular "couch potatoes."

Every dog has its own personality so regardless of breed, I'd make sure whatever individual dog you decide to get has the characteristics you're looking for. I agree with a lot of the suggestions though. Great Danes, Goldens, and Boxers are generally great with kids.

Since you have a Rottie, I am sure you are making sure he is part of the pack, with the poeple. I have a Rottie/German Shepard mix who is 135 lb now. Any dog will be great with kids given the right owners. I don't want to say anything bad about labs, but I think they are kinda stupid. Love all dogs, I assure you, and they are great if trained to find stuff if needed by the NYPD or other law envorcement. Mixed breeds and shelter dogs are the best. I have a basset mix and have some others in my home. Don't worry so much about the breed, go to a shelter and the best one will find you, and will fall in love with your Rottie, Just remember, Dogs Rule!

Beagles are mild tempered and laid back. They are very bright dogs. And very easy to train. They're good around other dogs and great around people and children. Another good dog is the small collies and the Samarian Alaskan huskies. One thing you should remember, sometimes it doesn't matter what other kind of pup you get, dogs still have they're personalities. So the sooner you get the new pup the better. After a period of time Rotweilers establish their attitudes very quickly.

Lots of people are saying labs and golden retrievers. From experience I think cocker spaniels are the best. They are happy dogs and it is very uncommon for them to bark at intruders plus they don't need much exercie. They would be perfect for your lifestyle!!!Border collies need lots of exercise so they are no good.Grey hounds cannot be let off leash and could potentially attack young children and your kids may by accident let it off the leash and then it's gone forever.Beagles are laid back and friendly but they are actuaclly not that smart, believe it or not! They are considered dumb dogs by professionals. People would think that they're smart because they are used at airports but they are just good scent dogs. They need 80-100 repititions to learn a command and do not follow human instructions very well.Boxers can be good dogs but that is only certain ones. Overall cocker spaniels do not bark at intruders, are friendly, good with kids, look cute and do not need alot of exercise! You cannot beat them!
