Poodles are supposed to be among the smartest dogs to train. Also labs and German shepards make good candidates. For example as seeing eye dogs or police K9's respectively. I would choose a lab because they are so friendly.

Doberman Pincer! I have 2 and breed them, they are great dogs. All look and bark, tame and very loyal to owner. They are puppies for about 2 years, but once trainned they are the smartest dogs.

Amongst the most trainable/smartest dogs in the world are Border Collies, Poodles and Labrador Retrievers. I have a Lab and he can sing, bow, high five, beg, roll over etc.

I have a schnoodle (toy poodle & miniature schnauzer mix) & he is brilliant. Only 7 months old & knows about 15 commands. The smaller version is probably too little to open the fridge, but definitely smart enough to.

I agree with the schnoodle!! Well, kind of. Schnoodles are definitely extremely trainable: they love to please their owner. It's important to remember that sometimes the smartest breed is not the most trainable breed. For example, my mom has a toy poodle. If dogs can have pervasive developmental disorders (as in, under the autism spectrum), my mom's dog would be the perfect example. This poodle has the savant qualities as well. She will do anything with a tennis ball: roll it to you, throw it to you, bring it to you OVER AND OVER. But if you want her to, "Sit," puh-leez. Oh, she knows what it means when you say it... but is she going to do it?? No way! Not when there are tennis balls to be attended to.Although, now that I'm thinking about it... I'm going to put a tennis ball in the fridge and see how long it takes for her to get it out. I'm sure she'd find a way!

Most trainable is probably the German Shepherd Dog but that doesn't mean it's the smartest. Breeds were developed for different purposes and are "smart" in what they were designed for.

LOL! I agree, Poodles are highly intelligent but there are a few that are extremely independant-alpha types. They'll move to the beat of their own drum, their terms. Our black Toy Poodle, Ziggy is his own boss, very smart, but doesn't listen to us 50% of the time. My husband thinks he might be A.D.D.- attention deficit disorder. hahaha!

My white Miniature will do anything you ask him and he's content being a master/people pleaser. My Choodle is very smart too but is naughty like a 4 yr. old boy. Gets into everything and knows when he's in trouble because he'll roll over and play dead just to warm your heart.
