I am looking for a good dog which would protect my home and family when I am not there. After lots of reading I zeroed in on Doberman Pinscher or German Shepherd. I would like to know more about these breeds.


I have the following concerns:

I live in Michigan so would like a dog which can do ok in the cold, the dog will live inside the house but for exercising and stuff can a Dobe handle the cold Michigan winters.

I do not have a kid now but planning for one in the next two years, will any of these dogs be a threat even if properly trained

I am a first time dog owner but willing to put the time and effort into providing the environment for my four legged kid.

Can these dogs handle being alone at home during the daytime. I can spend time training them and playing with them for a couple hours in the evening but when I am at work, can they be left alone.
