Depends on the breed. I've raised two Jack Russell Terriers (smart dogs) and am in the process of raising an Australian Shepherd (also very smart). However, each breed is different and even the gender of the dog makes a huge difference. The best way to find out which breed is best for you is to research it online. Perhaps asking neighbors in your area about their dog's breed and what they think. Of course, you ask 100 people you'll get 100 different answers. I don't know of any specific websites but look for an AKC website that will explain the breed, characteristics, temperment, etc. You might want to also check your local library for books on the specific breed you are thinking about getting. Research, research, research. Good luck!

I really love vague impossible answers like this. Why don't you just ask us what the "best" book is?

I think that everybody is going to have a different answer, because everybody thinks that their dog is the best (naturally). It totally depends on what you are looking for, how much room you have, how much time, etc. I have a chihuahua/dachshund mix, and think she is the best dog in the world, but other people think she is way too small. You will know when you have found the right dog for you.

It depends on what you are looking for.Labrador dogs are smart, easy to train, clean, and friendly, and they also make good guard dogs, but their bite is not that vicious. German Sheperds are excellent guard dogs but they are also the dog that will turn on it's owner most easily.Beagles and poodles are very smart, while poodles are actually the smartes type of dog, but are not very intimidating as guard dogs.Akitas, Pit Bulls, Rotweilers, and Chows are the best attack or guard dogs, but they could easily mame or kill yourself and have been known in the past to attack and kill children for no reason.Golden Retrievers, Collies, Labrodors, and Mixed breeds are all great dogs for kids to play with and raise.

i'm very biased as i really want a cavalier king charles spaniel. All breeds are different in so many ways and you must find one that suits yourself. but i would have a cavy no questions asked no matter how many problems they are prone to getting!
