What dog breed is best for someone who is allergic to dog hair, wants low hair maintenance & a good companion? I also want a dog that is small enough for me to pick up.

a Pomeranian! I am allergic to dogs to, but I got my Pomeranian and very rarely have additional allergy problems. My pommy doesn't shed very much, I bathe him once a week and I keep his dog bed clean, i throw it in the wash about once a week, I change my bedding once a week and vacume regularly and NO problems!!!! He is 4 lbs, and he wears a shirt which helps to. I think the bigger the dog the more dander so the more allergies.

Poodles are a good choice as their coats are classified as "wool", and they do not shed as much. If, however, you decide on a small dog like a chihuahua or other miniature breeds, be advised that they yap A LOT. It seems that the smaller the dog, the more they yap. I don't know about you, but I don't have the patience for it!

a yokie because they have good personalities, dont shed much, and if you keep it with a puppy cut it wont need too much grooming the only bad thing is that they are VERY VERY active and if you dont have some time they could get very bored and lonely.

Pet allergies are to dander and not to the shedding. No amount of fur, or the lack of will cause you to have an allergic reaction. The best way to help your allergies is to give your dog a bath 1-2 times a month (no more than twice monthly, or it will dry out your dogs skin and cause the dander to get worse) with a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner made specifically for dogs whose people are allergic. You can also try a product called Nature's Miracle. It is available through Dr's. Foster and Smith. Your allergies should not determine the breed you get. You should look for a breed that fits your lifestyle. A good place to start is animal planet's dog breed directory. It can be found at animalplanet.com. You can also go to akc.org. You should also consider getting a mixed breed dog that contains the breed you are most interested in. Many shelters will notify you if they get in a breed you are specifically looking for. You can also look on petfinder.com for specific breeds looking for a forever home. Good luck with both your allergies and your search for a new dog!
