Personally I'd go w/ the mini schnauzer. They are hypoallergenic, non-shedding and weigh between 11-15 pounds. They are very hardy and not a delicate dog by far. I take mine on walks every morning and afternoon and she just sleeps the rest of the time. She is good at keeping an eye on the house, she alerts me whenever there is a person at the door. They are very loyal. Only negative is that you'll need to take it to the groomer about every 2 months for a trim.

Our Lhasa Apso (sp?) is a wonderful dog. Very mellow and doesn't shed and is like a member of our family.-Ashley

Whatever you get Dont get a Beagle!!! They never calm down. Very hyper dogs. I had one and will never get another.

I would suggest a mixed breed. If you don't want shedding try something that is mixed with a poodle. They are small and smart! I have a pomeranian poodle and he is a very smart boy. Never sheds, but he needs regular haircuts. He is only 12 lbs, and that is with the few extra fat pounds.
