I would never of known about this breed if you hadn't mentioned it here. Anyone want to see pics of this fairly large breed (and info too)-------->

Are you referring to the leonburger that you've never heard of before?

The only reason I've heard of them is because one regularly goes to the same dog park as Lucky and I go to. They're literally small horses!

The Komondor and the Puli are separate breeds. They both have the dreadlocks and are from Hungry, and are AKC recognized.

Yeh, pretty good size but nice looking dogs, don't you think? In that link I gave, esp. the one dog on page 3--the face is 'pretty'--not what I was expecting for such a big dog. Bet they eat a lot!

Yea, I agree that they are pretty good looking dogs. They almost have the face of a labrador. Here's a cute litter of pups;

OMG! How many pups are in that litter?! If there are that many in all the litters---would think there would be more of these dogs around to see more often!

I met a Leonberger at a show a while ago. He was beautiful - a real gentle giant. But my biggest fear was that he would sit on my dog LOL!

This Leonberger breed has been around since the 1800s, origin of Germany, almost became extinct during world war 2.When the Leonberger was first exhibited, it was dismissed as merely a cross of several breeds, which is exactly what it is. Breed history! Heinrich Essig, wishing to produce a dog that resembled the lion on a Imperial Coat of Arms of the town of Leonberg.Germany used the Landseer, Newfoundland, St.Bernard and great Pyrenees to create this distinguished breed. I find the history of dogs facinating and very educational and like to share it all with other lovers of dogs !

That is very interesting! Think I'd of liked having one of these dogs---in my earlier years--Lol, now I am thinking of down-sizing even further for my next dog when my '2 boys' are gone--(Cocker spaniel and cocker/golden retriever mix). I have always liked big dogs but not 'in the works' anymore.

Default My Favorite Breed Of Dog

I really don't have a favorite. I do prefer Mutts though. They seem to be more loving, not as exciteable, easier to train and very loyal. I have two mutts and a minature German Schnauzer.

Yup now adays I am liking mutts more and more myself. They have a lot of charactor in mind and their different colors, sizes and so forth. I have had pure breds in my past but now a days you really have to be careful cause of all the in breeding there is. The pure breeds arent as pure as they were even 20 years ago ! I find from reaserch that mutts or even crossed now a days are far more healthier and have far less health problems. I have a mix of Schnauzer, Shepherd,Collie and Golden Retriever. Shes amazing in every way ! a very loving loyal girl! But every one has their preferances !

That is exactly how I feel! I keep hoping someone will come up with a miniature lab Anyone know what smaller breed has a temperment similar to a lab? I really think our next dog will end up being a rescue lab mixed with a smaller breed.

Well the exciteable part ! I beg to differ there lol Our mix has Boarder Collie in her and that shows, they are very Hipper dogs , always have to be on the move as they are working dogs, lots of energy and that comes out in our dog. Some times the mixes in them will be more predominant then the other (ie) Collie hipper, Lab placid and so forth, but none the less each and every mix definatly is one of a kind !

Aussie Terriors. I have a 2 year old Aussie terrier X shih-tzu (but it's mostly aussie in him) called Sparky. My mum had one when she was a teen as well. They like to play rough, they're protective, loyal and cute. They have a great personality, and mine is pretty good around kids. It's just other dogs that freak him out (And anyone who tries to hurt him, my other dog or someone in the family/ a friend.)

I have a little story about my mum's Yorkie Terrior! When she was a teen living in London England, Her Yorky's name was Royzy, he would take off from her and jump on the double decker busses and go for a ride lol around London and my mum would have to go and find him sometimes, other times he would return home on his own! Terriors are very protective of their peoples and can be nippy , nervuse and full of energy, they are a working dog, mainly for hunting. They are quick, wirey and can have a strange disposition about them, can be unpredictable at times.

This is not necessarily true. To note, there are many breeds of terriers. Only a few are prone to the disposition you note. I breed and raise Miniature Pinschers, these are in fact terriers and when a breed is true to it breed as in the case of mine, they are not prone to nervous behavior at all. None of mine are, nor are they "nippy". They will on the other hand bite when provoked and I can assure you this is not a nip. They were not necessarily bred to hunt but bred to ferret for rats, mice and small vermin. The definition of terrier is any breed of dog created by man for this purpose is a terrier. A true terrier is not nervous or unpredictable but is bred to be free thinking. This causes many to assume unpredictable or stubborn when in fact they are not. Many were created as feral dogs as with the Miniature Pinscher, left to survive on farms as feral cats are today. Thus very little human interaction when first bred. Terriers on the whole have maintained their bred for instincts probably better than any of the other groups and in most cases this can be seen today. Mine at 5 to 6 months have no problems with killing rats or mice instinctively. The minute they hit the yard they are at the ground looking for vermin including digging out moles in the yard. Which unfortunately does create the mine field effect in the back yard, holes everywhere.

I should note though that, yes they are very protective by nature but not just when it comes to the owner but all things theirs. They are excellent guard dogs as well.

Hey Yogi ! Thanx great info! pinscher is German for yes Terrier or biter . They apparently will happily challenge a larger dog and have the tendency to snap first and ask questions later lol . I have had the experiance of many terriers and other breeds as I am a former trainer and my mum a vets assistant, and father a breeder of Shepherds and Vizsla's ! OMG it runs in the family apparently lol lol, been around alot of different breeds of dogs all my life , just merley stating from our experiances, of some of the different terriers, not being a smart ass lol to old for that stuff these days lol or triing to offend anyone ! and maybe help a bit to our doggie friends here !

OMG! we had to build her a kennel because of her digging lol she digs like she trying to reach china lol and it seems the bigger the dog the bigger the holes lol shes mixed with Schnauzer, Border Collie, Shepherd and Golden Retriever !
