it really depends. you can get the best breed of dog in the world, but if it's not trained right, it's not going to be good with your kids. i have a pitbull and a 16 month old son. they are best buddies and i don't ever worry.

I can only say what has worked GREAT for us and what I've seen with our friends. We have a lab/german shepard mix and she's so good with our kids. We have friends who have a lab/rottie mix and it's the same story. I have found when you mix labs with a protective type dog, you get the best of both worlds. They are protective of the children and you too, plus they have the patience of saints! I believe that female dogs are better with children than males. Our dog is only about 45 pounds, so she's not that big. I also think that a lot of terrier breeds have a tendency to be snappy. You might want to check that out before you decide for sure! Best of luck!

Any dog breed can be great. I personally would not suggest a "guard breed" like a German shepherd because, while they're usually great with "their" kids, they're extremely protective and *could* confuse a well-meaning person with a threat to "their kid."
Try for a mutt; you'll get the best of all the worlds.

It's funny because when I first read your question I said "Definitely not a terrier". Then I read your details and cringed. I have a Jack Russell terrier and he is very smart, and loves to play, and ...... but doesn't like children!!!!He hasn't bit them or anything, just doesn't like them to come around him. He growls. I did some reading on terriers and found that most terriers are hunting dogs and get excited when something moves quickly......like small children!! There are only few breeds of terriers that I understand are okay with children. I know two for sure and they are Welsh Terrier and Airedales. I'm not exactly sure what kind of terrier you are thinking of getting but investigate the breed before purchase. Now, with all that said, I will confer with the others when they say the Labs and Retrievers are the best for children. They are larger in size though and I'm not sure that's what you're looking for.You can always call your local vets offices or shelters and ask questions like that. They are always eager to help because they want to see the right dogs go with the right families!!Good Luck!

Like most of your other answers I am going to sit of the fence and just tell of my own experiences. from the age of 7, I grew up with two terrier/jack russell cross dogs. They were soppy gits and really loved being stroked and tickled. on the other hand though, they were fiercely protective of members of the family and would bark at passers by. at the dog park, they would fight with other dogs sometimes and it is easy to get nipped trying to separate them.I think you need to research the breed. what was the dog bred for?if it's a guard dog or hunting dog then probably not a good idea.Training and familiarity are good but instincts can be strong enough to override these.

shi tzu's dont shed (none at all) they are great lap dogs and take all the "pulling on the tails" from the kids, i've had two and wont have anything else..heck they dont shed- they max weight about 20 pounds for a full size one, you can get a toy size too..they're awesome companions, dont get jealous or anyhing-hope this helps!

I am thinking of getting a dog and I have a 3 month old son...I really think German Shepards and German Shorthair Shepards are great I grew up with a shorhair and couldnt have asked for a more protective and loving dog. But I am thinking of getting an English Bulldog. Its not too big and the temperment is really great for a new baby to tug on. They take all the abuse and give nothing but attention. I hope that has helped your decision.

Havanese are always very good with children and other pets as well. They are playful clowns and love to play all day long!

I suggest adopting a female submissive mutt, maybe one that has had a litter. You'll never know more loyalty.

I have a 11 month old american bulldog, and he is very playfull and energetic. He loves my 2 yrs old nephew that lives with me and he has never attack him or anything. I'm very surprise how american bulldog are very good dogs with kids, they love kids. My nephew pulls his tale, steps on him, jumps on him, slaps him, kicks him...etc and i'm always telling my nephew not to do it, when i should be worry about my dog reacting to it but my dog just gets up and walks and dodge every attack from my nephew
I recommend american bulldogs, scott bloodline type. It also depends if you want a big dog cause they get big

Labs! They adore kids. I grew up with one, our neighbour's toddlers would come poke her eyes, pull on her ears, etc, and she still covered them in kisses. We would joke that she'd make a good baby sitter, if only she could change diapers.
