a good choice for you would be a sheltie collie they are fantastic with kids and very protective of their families, they are extremely smart and don't get to big either, they are like medium sized dogs. good luck.

if you have a fenced yard, I would suggest a lab. They're friendly and playful, but very gentle dogs. But if you have an apartment or a small place, maybe something smaller - a jack russell terrier, perhaps?

Sheep dogs (collies, shelties) tend to be the best around children. Golden Retrievers are good too. I watch Dog Whisperer a lot and I have read a lot of dog books and I lived in a home with six little ones and the sheep dog my Mom had was the sweetest.Stay away from Pit Bulls, Dobermans, Huskies, Pinchers, Rot WielersThey are gentle natured because they are natural sheep herders and will protect the little one (children)There are a lot of great dog books out there too, try the internet too.

We have a three year old and a two year old. We also have a cocker spaniel. He's great with our children and doesn't require a very big yard. He was also very easy to train and is an excellent watch dog. I highly recommend you check into a reputable cocker spaniel breeder or even a cocker spaniel rescue in your area. Some of these dogs have faulty genes if they come from puppy mills that cause them to be high strung, so please make sure you see the site where the puppy was bred before you buy. Good luck!

It depends on your family . How active you are , how old your children are , how large your home is , how much time can you spend training it etc . You might go to the library and get a book on dog breeds . I would not recommend a small dog like a peakenes with a small child or a Pit Bull , German Shepperd , Great Dane . Labs , Golden Retrievers , Irish Setters , Boston Terriers ,are nice family dogs .

I think you should go to the humane society and see what is available. You want one young enough to grow up with your child, but if the pup is too young it will have sharp teeth and not understand about biting. All pups are like this, but to rescue one makes you feel good about yourself. Mixed breeds have been known to be less temper mental so trust the staff at the society to identify what breed of dog you are looking at and if they are good with kids.

A good dog in the small breed would be a Jack Russel. If you ever watched Frazer on TV that's the fathers dog. I have one, it's a mix with Beagle, and she is good in the house and trips in the car. If you want a large breed nothing beats a German Shepard. They are good with kids, loyal, you don't need a large yard, and the I had years ago loved car trips.

I have a female, Chocolate Lab and she is the best dog ever. She is friendly and loves the kids (they are 13, 8, and 5). We got her as a pup and she has been a lifetime companion to our youngest. My advice is to do some research and get a dog that fits your lifestyle. If, you decide to go with a Lab, try getting the runt of the litter. We got the runt and she is only about 55 lbs.
