there are a bunch of different sites you can go on that selects dog breeds that match what you want in a dog... such as high/low energy, shedding, protectiveness, size, temperment, and weather requirements. one that i find particularly useful was the "dog breed selector" on the animal planet web page:http://animal.discovery.com/breedsel...dogselector.do or just google something similar to dog breed selector, and i'm sure you'll get results.
you could google it. but you also need to think about the amount of space you have. do you have a small backyard vs. a large one. do you spend allot of time away from home or most of your time at home. do you have kids? there are breeds that need allot of attention and breeds that don't. just like some dogs do well with kids and some don't. Please research this because I'm sure the last thing you want to do is get a dog and then find out that is not right for you and then the little guy needs a new home. It is hard on animals as well as people when you get displaced from home to home.
Visit an animal shelter and see what attracts you. Then talk to a registered breeder of that particular dog to learn about temperament and behavior traits of the breed. You may find a sheepdog to be the cutest puppy, but they often don't turn out to be real good with small children - they were bred for many years to be working dogs, and if they don't have sheep to herd, they'll try to herd the children. That can be unpleasant for the kids and the poor dog.Do look at more than just how cute the animal is. You really do want one whose temperment is close to what you expect of your pet. Don't rush the process; there's a dog out there somewhere that's just right for you!
