Default Is Ol Roy dog food bad for the flemish giant breed of rabbits?

My rabbit will not eat the pellets any more he only wants the same food I give my dogs. He tries to push them out of the way to get to it. Is he missing something in his diet by not eating the pellets? The dog food has helped him fill out but he is not fat as he get lots of exercise.

I think the Ol Roy has been recalled, so that isn't good, but dog food is not designed for rabbits and does not have the adequate ingredients and nutrients a rabbit needs. Dogs are carnivores - rabbits are herbivores. They have completely different needs. If your rabbit gets hngry enough he will eat rabbit pellets - but I'd also suplement him with an occasional carrot, grass, hay, alfalfa, cabbage, veggies (lettuce is worthless). Also - do you keep a salt wheel in his cage? He may like the dog food for the salt.

Yes the dog food is bad for your rabbit. Rabbits are strict herbivores and dog food has meat in it. if you are only giving your rabbit pellets then your bunny is missing hay, which should be available 24/7 in unlimited quantities. We also give our bunnies a variety of greens: romaine lettuce, dandelion greens, kale, parsley, cilantro. If your rabbit hasn't had greens, start with a small amount of one type and see how he tolerates it.You can also give fruit in moderation - like less than 1 T/day.Here is info on diets and hay:http://homepage.mac.com/mattocks/mor...bcare.html#hay

While I don't see a problem giving your rabbit some OI' Roy dog kibble as a treat, it should not be the mainstay of his diet. Rabbits are herbivores by nature, so should be fed a diet that their system is designed to digest for nutrients. If your rabbit quit eating his usual rabbit pellets, it is possible there was a change in recipe in the company making the pellets. It could be as simple as finding another brand of rabbit pellet that he does like. That and good hay should be all that he needs.Good luck with your bunny! With a smile,DreamQuestinPS - to the people who have answered that Ol' Roy is on the recall list, please get your facts straight before spreading false information. Ol' Roy CANNED food (and only select cuts) was recalled - not applicable to this conversation as he is not feeding the rabbit canned food. The only dry food that has been recalled by any manufacturer has been Hills' Diet cat food and now some dog biscuits by Sunshine Treats
