there is NO all around best breed of dog. It comes down to a lot of things. do you want a small dog or big dog? do you want a fluffy one or sleek one? Are you going to keep it inside or outside/ are you going to breed it? do you want one that doesnt shed? you just need to go somewhere that has a wide variety and see what catches your eye. Good Luck and Have Fun!

A very open ended and argumentative question. I have two Catahoula Leopard Dogs which are a herding breed that was America's First Bred Dog here in the US. It's ancestors were red wolves but they have the body of a lab. They are incredibly smart and not very distructive like some breeds can be. They are great working dogs and have been used as cow dogs as headers not heelers and they have been used for wild bore and bear hunting. My catahoulas are extremely loyal and very protective. They aren't protective to people that you introduce them to but they don't like pizza delivery guys sneaking up on the house. They do have a lot of energy but because of their webbed feet can be easily expelled in swimming. That's what we do for our dogs. I would recommend these dogs if you want a dog that's loyal, extremely well mannered and easy to train.

I love Boston Terriers. They are small dogs (under 25lbs) and very cute. They are typically black and white, but they can also be brindle and white. They have short hair, so they do not shed very much. They have very hyper personalities, and are known to be very sweet! Their tails come short naturally, and their ears are erect without having to dock them. Here is a pic of what they look like, along with some info. http://www.mytopdogs.com/dogpictures...tonterrier.htm

As charmed_and_delighted said theres no best breed as its peoples preferences on a dogs background etc and why they want a dog.
Personally i have a few favs and they differ abit.
Rottweiler - Loving and loyal.
Jack Russell - SO much fun and amazing characters
Collie - Intelligent, maybe too intelligent

Well that all depends on the person & their livestyle. Personally I prefer large mixed breed dogs. I wouldn't say there is a "best" breed. I love all dogs no matter the size. Each breed has it's good points. In purebred dogs you basically know what to expect from them, like size energy health etc. In mixed breeds, you are totally surprised, though many mixed breeds tend to be more healthy than the purebreds. Sometimes in mixed breeds you get the best of the breeds in the dog, or the worse. Some dogs can take a small house and yard with little excerise, while need a larger household and plenty of room to run and play. As far as temperment that cannot be honestly answered for ANY breed of dog. A dog's temperment is completely based on his/her raising, not the breed(s) of dog.

There are so many factors that contribute the best breed of dog for "you"... The best breed of dog for me may not be the best breed for you.... To determine this I would suggest researching breeds to find the best match. My favorite breed is the Wheaten Terrier... They are great family dogs, they do not shed and they are medium sized... Now that is just me... I am a family person with small children... My otehr favorite breed is the Italian Greyhound... This breed is teh breed I preferred when I was younger without small children because they are delicate, the usually bond closely to one person, do well in a small apartment, and shed very very lttle if at all :-) GOOD LUCK
