I have never owned a rottie personally, but have friends and family who have. Don't believe the hype. That's the first thing I'm going to say. Many people hear boxers are aggressive and "mean"...I'm sure you learned they're not. A lot of these dogs get a bad rap for no good reason *hugs her pitbull*
Rotties are guard dogs first and foremost. Don't expect one to love everybody, and don't expect it to be a quiet dog. It very well, but generally they will bark when somebody is near (loudly at that), and naturally are territorial. HOWEVER they are EXTREMELY loyal and affectionate with family. I know they tend to be good with children, especially those that are part of the pack. Many of the guard breeds are good with kids.
For a first time rottie owner I would highly recommend visiting a breed specific rescue though. These can be dogs that are hard to handle as they're large, confident, and strong willed by nature. It is best to find a young adult dog who has been tested with children and in other circumstances. A breed specific rescue typically has foster homes, and is very helpful with training, etc. A rottie puppy isn't the best idea for young children either as they are very exuberant, can be dominate, and are large. They can easily hurt a child by knocking them over or playing too rough.
Good luck in what ever you decide!
