What breed of dog is best for children?
I am SAHM, with two boys age 6 and 4. We live in a townhome with no yard but lots of parks to allow a dog to run. I would like a dog that is active but not too high strung. Any suggestions please.I am willing to take dog for at least three walks a day. I need a dog that does not require a yard to run in and that will be happy with my two boys. Thanks to all who answer.

german sheperd ... not only a smart dog but will protect. I recently got a 6 week old now 12 weeks and she is so smart and stays by my side all the time. I would also look at the hound breeds.

A Labrador or a Golden Retriever are very good dogs. They are kind, loving, good with children, easy to train, and fun!

A golden retriever or lab are the best with kids and also very smart. They are not too high strung but need alot of excerise. You would have to be dedicated to walking them every day. But they are the absolute best family dogs and are very loving and patient with kids. I have 2 golden retrievers.

Labs are very good dogs for children. However they need lots of room to run around and play in. I would suggest a small dog. Stay away from the little mexican dogs. They are to timid and will bit easily. Maybe a shitzo. I hope that I helped and Good Luck!

Labrador retrievers are good with children. I have a five year old daughter though, and we have a mixed breed. She is part huskey and Chow. My daughter just loves her. She is the most gentile dog.

note of caution, the smaller the dog the smaller the bladder. House trainging can be a problem with smaller breeds and they can be hurt by children. Find a medium size dog, look for breeds aound 25lbs or so. Try the local pound those dogs need homes.Good with kids:PugEnglish Cocker SpanielBeagleBasset HoundBrittany SpanielOld English Sheepdog

Labs & retrievers are well know for their lack of aggressive tendancies but can be highly strung. Most breeds will accept children so long as they both respect each other. What about an older rescue dog that has lived with children?

My recommendation is a Beagle. They are not big dogs and make great apartment pets. They are also very loving and caring and are great with kids. The fact that you are a stay at home mom is great because they do tend to get sad when they are left alone for long periods of time. In addition they are also a pretty healthy breed which can save you a bundle when it comes to vet visits.

The best dog you could possibly get is a Golden Retriever. They are great with all type of people but also form bonds with "their" people and are life long friends. They are also very smart and funny; you will find that they have personalities all their own and will amaze you at every turn. My mom has own that is almost 13 years old and she is the greatest!Something else to keep in mind is that there are also a lot of great animals at the local Humane Society that need good homes. Breed isn't always such a big factor but personality really is. If you go to the humane society you can spend time with an animal and get introduced with the kids and they also offer classes after you adopt.

A lot of people are saying to get a big dog, but you said you don't have a yard. As they are good dogs, I suggest you get a medium to small dog. I grew up with 2 american eskimos dogs. They are extremely friendly and great with kids and low maintenance. You can get 3 different sizes as well. There is miniture, medium (which is what I had) and large. They are very loyal to there masters and loving to everyone and would do well in a home with not much space.

It is a good idea to go to your local shelter and see what they can suggest to you. I live in a condo and work two jobs. I volunteer at the shelter close to me by walking dogs. It has helped me appreciated the dogs and when I move to a bigger home I can get the dog that needs me. Good luck in your search.
