Default what is a good mid sized 40-75 lbs. protective dog breed?

We have a tiny 4 lb. dog and want to get something that will keep an eye on him when we go on walks etc. He has a hard time getting harassed by some of the nieghborhood dogs that think he's prey. Want something we can go on jogs with etc. but has a little of the protective nature. Any suggestions...more interested in rarer breeds rather than the lab/golden retriever route.

youmight have problems mixing the dogs depending on how long you have had the little one try going to do training classes and mixing your dog with other so he learns to stand up for him self and have the right reactions.labs are nice protective family dogs and so are shepherds but like i said you might have a dominence issue

CHOWS are the best dogs ever! They are loyal, protective and pretty much the epitome of a great dog! But definitely do you research, you might even find it helpful to look at the AKC website to look at the different breeds in that mid size range that have traits that will fit you and your little dog well. Good luck!

Any dog can be protective of another dog, no matter the breed. It's all up to what the dogs personality is and how well it will get along with your other dog. They're is no perfect breed of dog that will do what you want it to.

Get a young labradoodle. They are gentle, protective, and very, very smart.

A golden retriever! They are the best dogs...only if you can take the first two and a half years. Then they will be your best friend!

Boxers are around that size. Also Bull Terriers, English Bulldogs, Pitt Bulls, Dalmatians, and Vislas fit that description.
