The best companion dogs i know for somone who's athletic, has lots of room and wants a breed thats loving is a red setter. I have one, they have a rep for being scatty and uncontrolable, but actually thats because they were over bred and the lines destroyed bit like wemeriers or staffs now! They have bags of charicter loving sllep when you want them to and play when you want also, what ever you chose though enjoy it and make sure you get pet insurance | |

It is best to find a breed that is congruent with your lifestyle. All breeds should have some exercise, however, some like herding breeds are happiest getting about 6 miles of running a day. If you plan to take the dog biking with you, a small breed might not be a wise choice either. How much effort to grooming are you up for? Are there common health problems that breed suffers? Again, research the breed and decide if you are ready to handle the responsibility of owning a particular breed. Tempermants can also be a factor in choosing a dog. Some are prone to nipping or may be known to be somewhat emotionally fragile.First look at your lifestyle and then also research the breed to decide if you are a good fit for each other. You won't regret it if you do your homework.

Retrievers of various types are a good choice, and Springers are underappreciated.

If you know how and have the time a German Wirehaired Pointer would fit the bill. Look at AKC for their standards. I myself have both liver and white and black and white (they stand out in a crowd). If you REALLY like fuzzy check out the labradoodles. They are beautiful animals. The reason you may like a GWP is that with the type of coat they have and the type of area you are talking about taking them - you get the best of both worlds. They are fuzzy, yet easily groomed. They are energetic, love to romp and play, hunt (point, retrieve and track), are wonderful clowns, and LOVE companionship. They don't do well sitting out in a kennel, they want to be WITH you. Good luck.
