Default small dog breed recommendation please?

I would like to adopt a small dog -- preferably a mutt from a shelter/rescue facility, so that complicates this question -- but would like recommendations as to what breeds/mixes of breeds I should aim for. Here's what I'd like: a lap dog, calm, NOT YIPPY, affectionate, smart, gentle, not a "one person" dog, friendly with strangers, preferably a dog that doesn't shed a lot or need frequent grooming. I know, I know, such a dog probably doesn't exist. Those are my preferences, however. My MAIN preference is NOT YIPPY and gentle and affectionate. Thanks!!!!

I have a standard fox terrier. I would not recommend one as they are yippy, insane, fast, sneaky and hyperactive. Anyone I have know who has one says the same thing. She is gorgeous but steer clear.I have heard Minature Foxies are ok

if you can find one - anything crossed with a poodle (toy or mini) will be less in the shedding, also they will tend to the smarter range - as to the "one person" thing socialize them alot to strangers esp. while young

I have a mini poodle/maltesse mix - very affectionate, very affectionate; barks little but has a high pitch when she does, so tiny as to almost not have a brain (literally & figuretively)

You might try to find one with some Italian Greyhound in it. They're small, and I don't believe they shed (if they do, it certainly couldn't be much). They have a reputation for being very sweet and are good around people, though of course, each invididual dog has its own temperament.

We have a Shihtzu and she is the absolute sweetest, calmness, most loving little thing in the world. We got her when my youngest daughter was two. She's very gentle and quite precious actually. I'll be praying that you can find one like her or one that at least has a little Shihtzu in her.Warning: Steer clear of Rat Terriers, Jack Russel's, and Miniature Dobermans. They're pretty wild and insanely hyper.

Any dog you get from the shelter will probably be greatful to have a home and be all of those things you want in a dog. Most people who get them from shelters say they have the best disposition.
