Default What is th best breed of dog for a middle-age couple who have always owned large

breeds but wish to downsize? The couple has owned Golden retrievers for many years but now due to an injruy they are unable to care for such a large and strong breed.

I like cocker spaniels, but they need exercise. Maltese are great dogs.-MM

Any small dog like a yorkie or king charles spaniel. You shouldn't focus as much on the breed as the individual dog. Most smaller dogs tend to be more yappy so it's good to keep that in mind and a puppy would take time and energy. Adoption would be a good idea as the people working there have a relationship with the animal and can give you information about each animal someone else may not be able to. A lot of shelter dogs already come housetrained (some get crate-trained and obedience trained) and with shots and vaccinations. You can log on to www.petfinder.org to find a dog in your area and www.petsmart.cm has breed guides so you can narrow down your search to what you want in a dog.

They Could Go To The Pound And Adopt An Unloved Dog , Give It A Great Life , That Would Be The Best Instead Of Buying A Puppy , Its Really Expensive Now-a-days For A Dog , And Hard To Train , So They Could Get One Already Trained , Thats What I Would Do If I Was Their Age

Smile Best of the little ones

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. We downsided to one ( after Dane and Standard Poodle) and he's wonderful. 13 months old, has his CGC, just passed his test to be a therapy dog, is a great little tracker will probably get that title next fall, goes to agility and obedience. He weighs 18 # so he'll be easy to lift when he's older and needs help, can be washed in the kitchen sink, fits anywhere, less hair, food , and poop to deal with. He is very responsive and quick to learn, he doesn't bark, is very social with dogs and people, and his tail is always wagging. I picked this breed for temprament and stability in a small breed. They have essentially no aggression issues are good with grandkids and happen to be very cute.
Watch for health issues-go to a dog show & meet reputable breeders- insist on seeing that the parents have been health tested for heart problems-they will have certificates-because heart problems are very common and heartbreaking for owners. Go on line Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Club for info also Dogs 101 has a clip from the TV show on Cavs.
Also Older, sherispike
