I'd say a golden retriever, or a yellow lab. Both have great temperaments with kids and are very family oriented. Plus they'll bark to let you know when someone's around. Hope that helps!^_^

If by 'security reasons' you mean both to protect your family and also be an excellent pet, I would have to recommend a Rottweiler. I have a male Rottie raised from 6months old with a newborn and he is gentle as a lamb with the child. But he is also a protective dog and intelligent.Dogs can sense aggression and Rotties are no different. If a part of the "pack" or family feels threatened he stiffens up and growls, and at 130 pounds that is enough to scare most people away. However, Rottweilers are a friendly, exuberant breed. They need walks every day and lots of space. This is a site with cited info, as most of what I said is personal experience. However, I think you will find the site corroborates my experiences.

Definitely a German Shepherd, but only male. Female German Shepherds tend to be more territorial then the male therefore more aggressive towards non-family members. Which is not a good thing if you have children. They are great with kids and great guard dogs!!! When the dog is a puppy make sure it is around many different people so it is more socialized. Good luck picking a dog!!

I would have to say Chihuahua . because of their size . what i mean is that even though they are not big , they are very protective . you dont have to get a working dog ( rottweiler , german shepard ect) all dogs big or small will protect your home and yes even a chihuahua LOL . i have a chihuahua and she is about 7 lbs but she really intimidates people cause she doesnt like people she doesnt know near our house. so what I have to say is pick whatever breed you like , they all will protect your home it is just their nature. and most invaders/burgalars wont even bother if they hear a barking dog inside because it will attract too much attention .the dogs known for protection such as rottweilers ect ~ are bred with that protective trait being stronger( not really nessesary) . like I said just pick the breed you like. all dogs can inflict damage when they try to bite someone . chihuahua's are good if your thinking of a small dog and for a larger dog i would say Laborador Retriever.
