We own a dog - a Korean Jindo - a rare breed in the USA. Discussion group online?
Anyone know of a way to meet other Jindo owners online in order to "compare notes" on aging, diet, etc?

That is so odd, I foster for a rescue, and I had never heard of this breed before. BUT- Chicago Anti-Cruelty has a Korean Jindo, a very nice dog, but is afraid of the shelter environment, so are looking for a foster home, or an adoptive home for this poor guy. I guess they are very rare, curious, I am, about their temperament, and such. Maybe you know of a home, someone interested in the breed?

jindo dogs
About a year ago i found a starving white "coyote". I found her in the middle of nowhere no collar- in heat- I thought she was some kind of mutt-I didn't know what else to do so I took her home-
A friend of mine searched catalogs and discovered i now have a Jindo- quite a nice one i gather-
she is a very sweet dog but extremely frustrating - she takes intensive work- everybody tells me how smart she is - this is good to a point- I can't keep her in the yard she climbs over a cinderblock fence under the wire fence and over the shock fence she stays in the area and is usually waiting for me when I get home but one of these days she is going to be hit by a car or cause a car accident and I'm going to get sued- which may be why the previous owners didnt' claim her- she won't come if she knows it means the end of her fun time- she tortures my cats - I can't leave her alone with them and my friends with little dogs won't leave their dogs alone with her- its not like she means to hurt them but she likes to pick them up by the scruff of their neck and drag them around- and if they fight back she clamps down and hurts them- and she has killed birds and squirrels who were unfortunate enough to be in my yard
then shes a terribly picky eater and I am tired of people practically accusing me of starving her when she refuses food- I am too the point of taking her to the pound but I know that is pretty much a death sentence
are you having as much fun as I am?

Jindo dog
Thank you for the link- I have seen it and it describes Gracie to a tee- I wouldn't give her up unless it was to someone I knew could handle her-like a trainer or someone who is home alot and likes to endurance run- I have tried getting her to fetch but she just doesn't see the purpose-
I just figure we're stuck with each other- she does like me- she is just trying to train me to do what she wants

Does she look like this one....?
I came across some folks in Seattle looking to re-home theirs. It was on craigslist. Not sure if that one is still available.

This breed is very similar in looks, temperment, aggression issues, prey drive and stubborness as the Akita...
They require a very firm owner, constant and consistant training and socialization at a very young age and will toloerate no form of physical discipline whatsoever...
The generally do not do well with small children,do not like people they don't know and will kill any small animal they come in contact with..
They will also escape at every chance they get...When I was breeding Akita's I had to have my 6ft privacy fence first set in concrete to keep them from digging out and then had to run chicken wire along the top as one of my females figured out that if she jumped on the fence when the neighbors cats were walking along the top of it she could knock them into the yard and I quickly got tired of finding dead cats in my yard...
This is not in any way a breed for someone that does not have experience with them or breeds with similar issues...
They can be very well behaved and loyal dogs with the proper training and socialization at an early age...Then can not be aloud to do what they want when they want as they are prone to because of their stubborness...If think for even a half a second that they can get over on you or they can run the show it's a recipe for disaster....
When I was breeding I never sold one of my pups to anyone who did not have experience with the breed and the breeder I got my Akita Seigi from also is the same way...
The reason for this is because these can be dangerous dogs when they are not put in the right hands..

I rescued Gracie at the side of the road in the middle of nowhere- I didn't realize she was a breed- she has a pretty face but from the nexk back she looks like a blond coyote- but my Korean friends recognize her for what she is- yes she does look like the dog in the picture but more feminine- she has beautiful eyes
I am not a dog person but I couldn't just leave her to starve to death- now I am stuck with her- we'll muddle through somehow-

You did a great thing by rescuing her and just need to deal with the card you were dealt. Good on your for rescuing her.

I currently own a Jindo/GDS mix, and cannot find anywhere online to exchange opinions regarding the breed. Pet trainers don't know of the breed, and my Veterinarian learned something new.
Since she's mixed with GSD, I registered on a GSD forum, but that's too tailored to the aspect that GSD is a large breed, while the Jindo is a medium breed.

WOW you've got to be kidding me
carolj:
did that title sound negative?
i was just researching raw food diets for my dog when i came across your description of your jindo. and yours and mine are VERY similar. mine eats well, but only things she's in the mood for. when she's in the mood to be picky, she is VERY picky....sometimes she'll just skip meals all day, then eat everything the next day. she also has the WORST RECALL IN EXISTENCE. she runs away whenever she thinks i'm threatening the end of her play time, so i have to approach her saying "Hime, i love you" while wiggling one finger. If you reach out to her with a hand, she knows you will grab her collar and drag her inside. She doesn't feel threatened by one finger though, so you can trick her into thinking you're just going to pet her. And also she really likes to chew on hands, so she'll try to eat your finger......then you can grab her.
my jindo is also female, looks like a coyote/wolf, and has a golden furred back. i have no idea where this trait comes from because jindo are supposed to come in black, red, white, tan, or full yellow. But she is also half husky.... her father had the typical husky coat with grey and white patterns....
any ideas of where this coat color came from? it is in no way like a "real jindo".
as for the food, if you haven't figured it out yet, jindo are korean dogs, and typically don't like to eat dog foods. they get bored very easily, so you have to constantly feed them new things. Most dogs in korea don't eat dog food....my parents aren't even sure if dog food companies exist there.....so if you don't want her to starve, you're going to have to give her homemade food. Maybe even try the raw diet (which is cheapest and healthiest)....back in her childhood, my mom had 3 dogs, all of which lived around 25 years. they lived off of korean food, and would probably never have even touched a bowl of purina.
my jindo is pretty "misbehaved" i guess. she acts like a total bitch (haha) when she doesn't get her way. you just have to be firm with yours, without ever actually resorting to physical punishment....which many korean dog owners are guilty of....
teach her tricks. if you already have, then is she disobedient half the time because she doesn't feel like obeying you in order to receive her treat? does she try to steal the treat before obeying your command? mine does....she also humps me to show her dominance......this should get better as she matures. a lot of that disobedience and rambunctiousness comes from the fact that jindo puppies are very energetic and like to show dominance at around 4 months old.
mine killed caught and killed a mouse yesterday, and she played with it so hard that she ended up chucking it over the neighbors fence. jindo are hunters, so you just have to deal with seeing the occasional dead rodent on your back porch ordeal.
i wrote way too much, and i signed up for this forum just so i could respond to this, but the fact that you happen to have a dog very similar to mine was just very striking. your jindo (if you are sure it is a jindo) is very unique, yet maintains the basic characteristics of jindo.
