...small enough for a dog flap!? We are looking into getting a dog (we did have a german shepherd but she died a year ago) and want a breed that is good with children - we have a 3 and 6 year old. We also have 2 cats (both were used to the previous dog) My husband does shift work and I work 3 days a week so for the majority of the time the dog would only be left for a few hours at a time. However for the odd occasions when it is left it would be better for us if it could get through a dog flap into a secure part of the garden. Any advice for a dog that is good with children and doesn't howl when left?

HAVANESE!!!! don't shed, is the best type of dog for anyone. look it up on the internet I gurantee you will love it. The only probablem is that it is expensive. ((i don't have one)) Shih Tzu's are good but are hard to get potty trained.

Pit-Bull,Helps reduce the human populationForget the pet-flap. Pitbull will just bust the door down. And he'll kill and eat intruders.

Get the dog I'm about to get. It's called a yorkie! They will fit in your pocket as a baby. When they're grown they are about the size of a 11 month baby or a lil bigger! They don't grow too much and they are sweet. Just say you would have a baby in the house.

When my sone was born, we had a rough collie. He was brilliant, but big. We've had a Shetland Sheepdog for nearly 11 years now and she is wonderful. In spite of being told that they are a timid and nervous breed, she loves people and, not very big. They come in a variety of colours, see link. Mine is like number 14 www.jeansdogshop.com | |

I agree with Max on this one. If I was getting a dog for my family with small children, I would get an Aussie Shepherd or a labrador retriever. Both, are wonderful dogs around children. However, they are a bit larger than you are asking about.Personally, I now have pomeranians, which are also wonderful little dogs. I would NOT own a pom with a child under the age of 3. The dog can get a bit rowdy at times and also tends to think he is "the baby." They also shed A LOT, but, well worth the extra grooming that is necessary. Don't get me wrong, I love my poms; I just think they would pair up better with children once the children are a little more independent and out of the toddler stage. Then, I would think they would make an excellent pair Good luck with your decision and enjoy the new addition to your family when you get it.
