Default I am looking for a dog breed that is gentle yet intimidating.... Any suggestions?

We have 3 children and want a family pet. We arent looking for a viscious dog, just one that might appear intimidating. Any suggestions? Size doesnt matter. Does a certian sex make a dog more agressive?

We have a boxer and although he looks very scary he is the nicest guy he loves children-this breed loves to play and he is sweet-he also has very short hair that does not require much grooming and hardly any shedding. He is also a very loyal dog.

I would agree with a boxer. They are very loyal- one of those breeds that will follow you from room to room and lay down at your feet.I have a male, but I got him neutered. He was rescued from the street, but now he is well trained and socialized. He plays well with other dogs, and I never put him on a leash when I walk him- he is always by my side. The best part- I am a second grade teacher and I take him to school with me frequently. My students love him, and he loves the attention. He is practically a member of our class!

Boston terrier all the way!! They are the cutest dogs ever and I 2 of them and a 9 month old and they are great watch dogs, very loyal and protective, and GREAT with my baby!! not to mention they are super smart and I didnt even try to potty train mine and they are both 100 % house and crate broken, I dont know maybe I just got lucky but they are amazing dogs.

I would also say a boxer. I had one when I was little and she was very protective of her family but also gentle. Later when I was older I got another boxer and had the same experiance with her. People were always afraid of her when looking at her, but anyone who knew her knew that she was just a big playful puppy! She was great with all 3 of my little brother too. We had her until she was 13 years old.I am planning on getting one for my son when he is a little older.

A GREAT DANE is good...........A Great Danet is very sweet, affectionate, and playful. Due to his size, he should always be supervised around children, but is generally well mannered. This dog is gentle but with a little intimidateness.

GREAT DANE! They are super intimidating, but they don't realize their size. We had three rescued great danes at one point in time, and when we left the house, we caged them in the kitchen with baby gates that only came up to their knees. They could have easily stepped over, but stayed put anyway, even though they hated it. They are easily trained, and none of mine have ever needed a leash- they stick right by your side! They do shed, but I'd prefer their hair on my floor to a long-haired Terrier's or Husky's any day! From what I've experienced, they are not playful dogs. I would watch them around the kids, though, because they are a bit clumsy, and if a good whack on the leg from a wagging tail can cause a bit of pain in an adult, imagine what your toddler might think when they get knocked in the face by one...

I am a mom of three and I have three dachshunds and one German Shepard. My Shepard is so sweet and where ever the kids go she goes. They are great with kids. Dachshunds are good as well but with them it is better to get a male because the females tend to have mood swings and can bite when they are in heat.
