I want a new dog, what dog breed should I choose.?
I have a lab and was thinking of getting a dog of a different breed. Since I love the outdoors and own a ranch I would like it to be sporty and reliable around children but with watch dog capabilities. There are also many loose dogs around so I would like a dog that can hold his own. So far I like the staffordshire bull terrier. Im I on the right track, any breed suggetions?

I think you should get a Airedale. My parents owned one when I was younger, and I think they are a great breed.

sounds like what you want is a catahula cure (u know the speckled grey white and black dogs that can be mistaken for a cattle dog.) they are exelent family dogs and excellent watch dogs. i havent owned one but i have been around them and they dont take to stragers easily like a pit or rockwiller but you dont have to worry bout them turning on you or your family either. but you might want to try your local rescue shelters and pound. you might get a mut but it could be the best dog you ever owned. and most loyal. also you have a chance to save a dog from being killed

A terrier is best, because of their sporty nature. However, I would suggest a mini schnauzer for watchdog capabilities, or the norfolk terrier for its activeness and and friendliness around children. The west highland white terrier and the scottish terrier are very popular around both adults and children alike.

I agree with the first answer!!! Go to a dog shelter and look for a dog with a nice friendly personality who is in need of a good home, not one because of their breed.

I suggest an Australian ShepherdI have a 3 month old fur ball! They are super energetic and have great personalities. This breed needs an active owner because they can become destructive if left unattented or unstimulated for long periods of time. Your situation sounds perfect for this breed. They are medium size (50-65) pounds, and if bred based on their origin of work they should have strong herding instincts. As well, they can be weary of strangers (watchdog capability), so they will bark to alert their owners. They play well with other dogs.

There are still quite a few things I don't know about you that would help giving a right suggestion. Therefore I'd recommend visiting this site: http://www.glowdog.com/bestdog/ where you can find a questionnaire helping you choose the right breed. But from what I've read about you I think German Shepherd might be a good idea for you. But to make sure you'd better take the test.

I own an american staffordshire terrier, a bit like the staffordshire bull terrier. He is only a pup, but is great with children and other people. With other dogs, he is not the best. If you want a dog that can hold his own, then you are on the right track. American pit bull terriers are great as well.

Personally I would stick with a Labrador, 4 this reason you all ready know what to expect from a lab becouse you allready had one......Yes every dog is diffrent ,but they are allso the same with in the breed......Plus it is hard to beat a lab in intelect and endurance.....And the loyalty that labs have to there human is awesome..........Good luck
