Default We are looking to buy a family dog, can anyone recomend a non-malting, good with

children breed please? I am currently looking at giant schnauzers, basset hounds and soft wheaten terriers as choices but would welcome other suggestions. My parents have had dogs all their lives and we also use to show clumber spaniels so i am aware of all the love and attention and training dogs require. Im looking for a low to non malting, child friendly and easy to train dog. I am a full time mum so the dog wont be left alone for long periods of time. We have a reasonible size garden and also live near several lovely parks so walking and exercise is not a problem.

all dogs moult, i hope moult is what you meant.why don't you go to your nearest dog rescue/refuge & find a perfectly good dog that needs a second chance with someone like you & your family?don't give your money to a breeder who over-breeds dogs just for the money.i have a staffordshire bull terrier, known as Nanny dog for their ability to be very good with children. i understand dog-pounds are full of them, where people are so fickle & tire of them.they hardly moult as their hair is very short, mine sheds such a little i hardly notice.so have a lovely day out, at the local dogs home, take the family & let the perfect dog pick you.

I have rescued beagles and I think they are the best things ever. They do shed a good bit but they are well worth a good brushing now and then. They are wonderful with children and so cute you can't help but love them! You could try Petfinder.com. There are so many unwanted pets that need a good home and would give you the most unconditional love you and your family have ever known.

I suggest a G.Dane. The reason is unlike theire fierce size and look, they're unbelieveably calm and if not trained well, a bit shy and may act cowardly and The're real family dogs.If theire size is a big obstacle for you, or if you prefer a dog whaich has the same uses of a barbie!!!, then I suggest a poodle.

The best thing to do is visit your local dog rescue centre (eg RSPCA) and have a good look round.Try and find a younger dog that has had previous contact with children(and house trained). My favourite dogs are definitely mongrels, Heinz 57 variety.I got my dog this way,he stood out like a sore thumb, just sitting there, while all the others went mad. He is the best dog ever.He had been left alone for long periods,by his previous owners. All he wanted was affection. Also remember having a dog restricts you, eg, if you want to take your children out for the day, lots of places don't allow dogs (beaches, theme parks etc) and its not fair to leave your pet home alone for long times. .

We have a west highland cairn terrier and although she doesnt lose her fur if she isnt brushed everyday then it gets all knotted up and has to be cut out.

I couldn't agree more. We are currently going through the process of trying to adopt a rescue dog. Lots of people have said to us 'why don't you get a puppy?' but I can't do that knowing that perfectly good dogs are being left to live out their lives in rescue homes. Granted, there are some that wouldn't be suitable because you have kids but I have no doubt that there are plenty who are suitable for your situation.

Give a rescue dog a chance

Hi, I have a miniature poodle named Jax and he does not shed, mat and needs little grooming between cuts. He is very friendly with children and other dogs. very affectionate and obedient. All he wants is to be with us. We waited til I was retired to get a dog and he was well worth it. Lots of rescued dogs are mixed with poodles now and I'm not sure if they are hypo-allergenic too but they are cute and tend not to shed. Whatever dog you decide on I am sure he will be very happy with your family.

I suppose I'm just weird but, I'd be taking allergy shots before I even thought of giving up my dogs. Nothing would make me give them up!!! My girls are my life.
