| | Guest | What is the best dog breed for me?
I work regular hours M-F. My daughter comes home around 3:30 so the dog would be by itself during that time. I like to run, be outside and go to the dog park. I would love to have a dog I could take everywhere. I want a dog to do those things with but also that will lay around at home too and not be all hyper all the time. Also, I dont want a dog that sheds a lot. I would love to have the dog inside and eventually, after training, have the run of the house all day. My thoughts on the breed are maybe labs, dobemarn, any bird dog types or maybe a mut from the pound??? Any suggestions?

You should get a mini dachshund. They are awesome. They are really good dogs and very smart.

Go to the pound. You can probably find a young dog that has all the qualities you are looking for and has been housetrained already. Added bonus is that it will have all of its shots up to date and you will have a better idea of its temperment.

yea that sounds good i think beagles are really laid back as far as that goes, but like i have a t-cup pomeranian, and when i'm away she sleeps, at first she would pitch a fit, but with any dog you get you have to train it so it would be ok. i suggest not getting a puppy, they are really needy, and i know you need your sleep so i'd get one that has been around for at least a few months to a year. now if you leave it asleep all day, you can't expect it to be really calm when you get home. it's going to need lots of attention, you should take it outside and run it alot and then play with it. i hope that i was of some help.

interesting you asked, if i were you rather than going to the pet shop try going to Katrina dogs.com they have hundreds of great dogs available, but my preference would be the little known Rat terrier they are relentless and will stay indoors for days without a problem they can be trained to use a little box for the short term and will hold their own against an intruder. and yet they are most kind to children.

Get a westie. They are great dogs! They are active enough for you to run with each day, and even though they are tiny they are damn quick on their feet. While you are gone, they will likely sleep all day, if they are getting regular exercise morning and night. They love routine. They are stubborn and need alot of discipline because of this, but they train well and love to learn new things. Being highly food -orientated so pick up new tricks really quickly. They are hypo-allergenic dogs, as they don't shed. Mine is an inside dog, I have chocolate brown carpet, and you never see a hair on it.They are great with both kids and older people, and have ripper personalities. They only down side is the puppy wars - they last a good 12 months and will be testing on your patience. They also have no road sense, even after good training, you will need to keep the dog on a leash at all times when you run/walk.Good luck with whatever you choose.

get yourself a greyhound, or a lurcher, the laziest of dogs, will sleep all day if you let them, but like nothing better than a good master and a few runs now and again, never known to bite or be aggressive, i know you can get these from the kennels in the uk. not sure of the states, as you said pound,

If you want a small dog, malteses are great if you want a big dog, get an english lab. Oh, get the lab fixed and you will have the most gentle baby ever. My lab is so sweet. He is a hundred pounds of muscle but he wouldn't hurt a flea. Oh...one more thing...get an English Lab...not American.

Labs shed A LOT, Dobermans are not good for young children, bird dogs bark a lot...and with a mutt you just don't know what you'll get. I have a lab and I love her. She loves to fetch, play in the park, go swimming, and is GREAT with children. BUT SHE SHEDS SO MUCH! and as a puppy they are extremely hyper. Why don't you look into a Schnauzer?
