| | Guest | Smaller version of a Border Collie?
I am looking into getting a dog. My friend has a border collie and it is so sweet. However my condo building only allow small dogs (weight limit of 30 lbs or something I think), so is there a smaller version of a border collie?
I also quite like Jack Russels too, but I kind of think that the Border Collie is sweeter, more docile and more cuddly?

Hey,
I agree, Jack Russells are beautiful dogs but if you want a cuddly dog, yorkie or pomeranian?? They are fluffy but need all the attention they can get. They xan't think of anything better than sitting on your lap and playing with you. I suggest do some research, I recommend this site, Dog Breed Information Center®, DBI
Good Luck and please take my advice into mind.

Shelties are a good breed, small in size, but need a lot of exercise. Same with the Border Collie or any working dog breed. I've had Rotties and Shelties and currently have 2 male Shelties and all of them needed a lot of activity.
Sheltie pups are very active, but once they get older, they settle down and make great house dogs. They are smart and remember quickly and will let you know when danger is near.
Shelties need brushing every day, which may sound like a chore, but doing it daily will keep you from having to pay for costly grooming. If their coats get wet, you must dry them off and brush them, otherwise their hair will mat.
So, if you're looking for a small sized Border Collie, or a herding breed, the Shetland Sheepdog is the way to go.

I agree that a sheltie may be the best boarder collie substitute you'll get. But I have seen a lot of beautiful boarder collie mixes who are not 30lbs and have all the great characteristics of the breed. It may be worth checking your local shelters and rescue groups to see what's out there.

As a general rule, the herding breeds aren't the best choice for condo living. They need a job, and if you don't provide one, they'll make it up as they go. They need a lot of exercise, too.
You might consider a standard or miniature long haired Dachshund. They're more laid back than the smooth or wire haired Dachshunds, have the beautiful, flowing coat of a Border, don't require as much exercise, and their "job" is to lay at your feet or on your lap and look beautiful. They have a great sense of humor, love to play, live to make you happy, and they're pretty easy to train, unlike their smooth cousins. If you keep then in proper weight, even a standard should be less than 30 pounds.
