Default We All Think Our Dogs Are Gorgeous, But...

Which breeds do you think are ugly?

I know it's a horrible question, but so many people have asked which is the best/cutest breed, that i just wanted to play devil's advocate. We have all seen dogs on tv etc and thought 'i don't like.....they're ugly'!

This is not a personal attack on breeds or their owners. so please, please, please don't take it as such. The world would be a very boring place if people only liked one breed, so it's good to have so many. Here are a few of mine, AND IT'S NOT PERSONAL!

English bull terriers - Lovely temperament and generally very friendly, but very strange to look at.

Chihuahua's - I have a phobia of rats, so I'll say no more.

Greyhounds/Lurchers - Again, generally a lovely temperament, but natually very skinny, which I don't like.

Akita's - Because of their tail, they're bottoms are on display 24/7. I'm not too keen on the front end either!

By the way, both my dogs are JRT/Border Terrier mix. Whilst to me they are the most beautiful dogs in the whole wide world, not everyone see's it that way. If you think mine are of an ugly breed, then by all means say so. I WON'T TAKE IT PERSONALLY!

Your the only person I've ever met that thinks an Akita is ugly!..I've owned them all my adult life and IMO their much more attractive then a JRT!

First of all, we have never met - you have read my post, that is somewhat different.

And secondly, I emphasised not to take it personally. Calm down!

I'm sure they're the sweetest of all possible dogs, but pure-bred Pekingese have never done it for me. Just watching one roll along makes me exhausted for them, it just looks like they have to put forth such an effort to walk.

Forgive me, all Pekingese Parents out there!

Ohhh team pupsters, you really like starting the threads that could cause a possible riot dont you? I like you (even though you dont like akitas) Still have a stronger oppinion on your breed banning thread, but I'll answer here too.

The chineese crested (i think thats them) the hairless gremlin looking dogs, they just look frightful.

I must say though too, I have never ever come accross anyone before that hasnt liked the appearance of the Akita, Certainly the odd few that are scared of them, but still admire the apperance from afar.......Im glad I can see Katos bum, because of all the long fur there at least I can see if he is clean there before dragging it inside....LOL!

Well that is one advantage that i hadn't thought of!
I don't mean to start online riots (or offline either for that matter), but lets face it, if we all loved the same breed, the world would be a much duller place. You don't have to love all dogs to be a dog lover - i don't think so anyway. And coming to Akitas again, i admit i am terrified of them and no amount of reassurance will change that!

Take care and merry christmas

Oh by the way - yes chinese crested, not a fan of either type especially the hairless ones. Lovely temperament, not pretty to look at. I'm not a fan of dogs with 'pigtails', ribbons and stuff. I still find 'doggy clothes' a very bizarre idea too.
As a 33 year old woman i am becoming somewhat concerned that i am starting to sound like a right old boff!

after your experience it is understandable that you have a reluctance, I know that there are a few diffrent breeds that I too am wary of and will admire only from afar because of things that have happened in the past.

perhaps all lousy dog owners should be put to sleep instead. I wonder if that would be a controversial thread to post? LOL!

Can't imagine you being wary of certain breeds (even though i don't know you)

By the way - what time is it in tasmania? Are you an early bird or are you going to bed very, very late?

It's midnight here!

Dont worry, many family and friends were quite shoked that I took on an Akita as our companion, before getting Kato, I was far from a doggy person. But it has been a wonderful experience for us all, we love him dearly and has been the perfect companion for all of us.

Neither early bird or night owl, its 11am sat morning here.

Ooh bigger time gap than i thought! mind you there are different time zones in australia isn't there? And our clocks went back a few weeks ago. Not much daylight here at the mo :-(

What made you decide to get a dog if you don't mind my asking?
My husband and i wanted one for ages, but we were both working full time and thought it wouldn't be fair to the dog. Last year my husband had to give up work, so we decided to get one and ended up with Ziggy, the little monkey! After a few months, we decided to get him a play mate and ended up with Nellie - another cheeky one!

There are diffrent time zones here, but there is not a massive diffrence I think its only 2-3 hours diffrence from the west to the east

Dont mind you asking at all!

I have up until recently always been a bit of a feline fancier, but hubby, grew up on a farm with dogs around him always, so always wanted us to get one.

We held of for years, firstly because we were renting, then because we had a baby (didnt want a dog around until daughter was old enough to be involved in training etc) then renovations on a bought house began. Finally we got to the point that fences were secure, home owned, child old enough to understand what having a dog is all about. I could hold him off no longer.

Because I was not much of a doggy person, we had to 1. get a pup to allow me some bonding time, 2. Spend alot of time choosing a breed that would suit our home and our family nature. Regardless of said reputations and history, after months of research the Akita sat on the top of our list, and met every need of nature and personality that we were looking for. So, the decision made, the breeder search began, we were very lucky to find a lovely lady, that was really good with us, and made sure that we were armed with everything we needed to know.....the good, the bad and the ugly (although we had already researched it and was prepared) she let us into her home to meet her dogs, and my love affair began there.

So all history now, but the beginning of my passion, love and admiration of our canine companions, particuarly the Akita.

Ah, my uncle's in perth, and depending on the time of year here, he's about 8 hours in front, which does NOT help my jet lag!

Well they've both just woken up and Ziggys gone straight into 'play mode' whereas i'm in 'going to bed mode'

I'm going to let them out for a quick wee and 'whatever' and that's it bed for all of us i'm afraid!

Nice chatting to you and if we don't speak before, have a good christmas.
