Hi,
I'm new here and am posting this to breeders thinking you will have the answer I seek.
We rescued a MinPin,I think that's what she is, and have decided to keep her. She is just lovely. She has some behaviors that we are managing to deal with cause from her abuse and neglect. Other than a couple minor things she is a great dog. We got little info on her background and only can assume she is 4 or 5. Well here's the problem. My little shih tzu/maltese mix male locked with her. This was not what I was expecting because I didn't even know she was in heat. No signs of blood, no noticeable swelling in her ummm, area. As a matter of fact we made the appointment for the !2th of june to get them both fixed. Should I let her continue with the pregnancy? Should I have them aborted? What is the right thing to do? If she has the babies I don't worry about good homes, I'll find them. I am big on the don't have a pet if you don't got the time or patience thing. My big concern is her having problems with delivery. Both dogs are small. I just want to do the right thing. So if anyone out there can give me advice, please do. Thank you

Firstly, I would like to ask why your male dog was not neutered in the first place. I am a big advocate of spaying and neutering your dogs unless they are an exceptional example of their breed or are a conformation show dog. In males, it helps decrease aggressive behaviors fueled by testosterone and unpleasant behaviors like mounting (not to establish dominance, but because they are "excited"). I have to say that I am very conflicted here. I wouldn't count on being able to find good homes for all the pups. Even though they are small dogs, that doesn't mean that there are people clamoring to adopt them. Thankfully, due to the size of both of the parents, there will likely not be very many puppies, probably not more than 4 or 5. If you plan on continuing with the pregnancy, I would start looking for homes among friends and acquaintances now, before the pups are born. That way, you can be sure that all the pups will be going to good homes and you will not have to worry about that while the pups are growing bigger by the day once they are born. You could even keep one if you like. I would immediately get your male neutered so there is no chance of this happening again. As soon as the female is done raising the pups, be sure to have her spayed as well. This just frustrates me that so many people don't fix their dogs; as a professional groomer, I see so many dogs that haven't been neutered or spayed, and their owners can't give me a good reason why they aren't fixed! In females, the risk of mammary cancer is decreased by a huge degree, and in males, there is no chance of testicular disease and a greatly reduced chance of a scrotal hematoma. Just be sure not to send those pups to a county shelter, because there is a huge euthanasia rate there, even among little puppies. A no-kill shelter would be a good last resort. You can be sure that they will not be put down due to lack of space, and they will be taken care of until they find good homes.

If she is due to go in on the the date you noted which has come and gone, you can abort if she even took. Most likely as I noted prior she probably did not.
