Gotta love JRT's!!!
Congratulations! You will never again experience a dull moment! Lara is my first JRT. I've always had mixed breeds from the shelter before. However, I have a bad back problem and needed a little dog. I looked at the various shelters in my area for 6 months for a small mixed breed puppy and couldn't find one. I actually took that as a good sign - more people must be spaying/neutering their dogs.
Anyway, I found my way to a lovely woman who breeds shorty JTR's. Buying from a breeder was a whole new experience for me. I got to meet Lara's mom and dad and a couple of siblings. I saw where she lived and how the breeder (Kim) interacted with all of the dogs. We spent more than two hours talking about this breed so I (thought I) knew what to expect. I don't know if this is common with buying from a breeder but, I had to sign a contract promising to have her spayed and to return her to Kim if for some reason in the future I couldn't keep her. She said she never wants one of her dogs to end up in a shelter. I was really impressed by that.
I've come to the conclusion that you never know what to expect from a jack. They are incredibly bright, as stubborn as the day is long, and just so much fun to be with! There is an astounding amount of energy packed into those little bodies. Play time is a full time job around my house. Lara tries to copy everything my border collieX Bailey does. I really don't think she realises that she is actually a small dog. Lara sees the world through a big dogs eyes.
I have no doubt that you're going to love this breed. They really are special. If at some point I decide to add to my canine family, I would definitely get another JRT. The two of you are going to have a lot of fun together!!!
