I owned a few breeds in my time, but none stand out like the Alaskan Malamute. Beyond a shadow of a doubt, malamutes are very smart animals. I believe they're vocabulary is approx 200 words. I've also found they are great teachers for younger pups. One of my females, of which isn't even old enough to have her own pups, teaches pups half her age what has been taught to her previously and disiplines the young pups when not done correctly.
Protective? My older female Malamute has taken the role of protector. She will not tolerate any threat made against anyone in the pack by an outsider. She is sweet and tender to those she knows, but if you be an outsider, keep your hands in your pockets. Malamutes have a good sense of who's who.

I tell you what, I agree with Fuzzman, about the brains of an Alaskan Malamute. I have had many breed in the past, and none of them even come close to how smart my dog is. I knew from when he was a pup, he was special and smart. During potty training, he only had 1 accident in the house, and none for the past 9 years....... | |

Only a few people here in our country own a Alaskan Malamute. Alaskan Malamute is a really beautiful breed. They amaze me. They look so regal and they are so intelligent. I'd love to adopt one but the climate here in our country makes it hard for us to take care of the breed.

I am on my third Malamute, my first was a mix, my
second was wonderful male that I lost just before age
3 in 2003 and now I have my 4 year old Malamute Molly.
Molly is a grey and white female, is a Princess by her
own definition. I also own a 7 year old Siberian Husky
Tookla. Molly and Tookla are so compatible. I get
all the back talk in two languages and their sneaky
stubborness. Great to see the differences and similarities
in the two breeds.

I currently have 2 Malamutes, one 3 1/2 yr. old male and one 1 1/2 yr. old female. Does anyone in this thread work their dogs? Weight pull, sledding, etc.?
I have a lot of difficulty (and concern) over my dogs' dog-aggression. Fuzzman, it sounds as though you have several Mals. What do you do to combat dog-aggression w/in your kennel? At some point I would like to own more than the two I have and build a sled-team, but this is a major point of concern I have.
Anyone's thoughts on the matter would be appreciated!

I work both my Malamute and my Husky as a pair and with
other dogs. We cart, we sled, we hike, we scooter.
Malamutes are by nature same sex aggressive. You have
one of each sex, have you had any problems with your opposite
sex pair?
I am a member of a Malamute Club and a Working Dog group.
Malamutes are harder to team with any dog of the opposite
sex. My female is pretty mellow and gets along well with most
other females, but just a growl from them will set her off. She
is very good working with Sibes, even females, as they are
much more dog friendly.
That said, YOU are the alpha of your pack dogs, and of among
your two there is probably an alpha. If you are going to continue
acquiring Malamutes you are going to have to be the strong alpha
but also probably keep them in seperate kennels. The more you
work your dogs and the more you are involved as alpha, the less
problems you will have. But it is trait that is not going to go
away, as much as it is going to be controlled by you.

We have a kennel that breeds them not far from our home and we have one on our street. The ones I have met are well behaved and very obedient, they have races during winter which are neat to watch. Our neighbor's dog has always been very friendly and they do seem very intelligent.
