Default What is it?

I always thought I had a good eye for guessing a mixed breed's lineage....WRONG!! Found this site which has the latest in DNA testing and learned that it is very rare that you can guess a breed by appearance. Some of these dogs' ancestry blew me away.

Oh that's very cool!! I wonder how accurate it is.

Also, every 'pure' breed is composed of various breeds (or local strays) which went before it, so in essence every breed is a mixed breed anyway. It's just a question of degree.

So I guess that when they say "traces of Bloodhound" it may not mean that an actual Bloodhound is (necessarily) in their ancestry, but rather that gene signatures commonly found in Bloodhounds happen to also be present in that particular dog.

It weaves a tangled and very interesting web!

I didn't look through all 60 pages of dogs but out of the ones I looked at, I only remember a Miniature Poodle and a Pomeranian having no other DNA markers. I definitely will look at all of them at some point because it was really fun but it did make me feel really stupid. lol

This is a blood test as opposed to the normal mouth swab test that you can buy from AKC. It identifies more that 130 AKC - recognized breeds and since there are more breeds than that, I would assume that the 130 are the most common. Here's what they say about the accuracy:

Quote:
WISDOM Panel™ MX is used to help determine the breed makeup of a dog. Validation testing has resulted in an average accuracy* of 84% in first generation crossbred dogs of known parentage. The breeds in this validation study represent 45% of AKC registrations. WISDOM Panel™ MX is not intended to predict disease or behavior in any particular dog.

*Accuracy was determined by average positive predictive value across breeds studied
I have a Maltese and a Pomeranian that I rescued and while they look like purebreeds, you never know. My curiosity is far greater than my bank balance so it will have to remain a mystery.
