Default Akita Dogs

I would love to discuss Akita Dogs, however, I was just refused adoption by my local shelter of a beautiful Akita puppy. The reason... I was told by the supervisor of the shelter that she wanted someone who had already had an Akita to adopt the pup. I told her that my dog is part Akita but that was of no consequence. I was also told that my twelve year old son, 5.5 feet tall and 165 pounds, was a small child and that she would not adopt the Akita pup out to someone with a small child. I would never call my son small but okay. Is there any basis for this bias. I came there with an approved application and glowing references from my vet and all my friends. What gives? Am I missing something. Yes. Let's talk about the breed.

Wow, Not so many Akita lovers here is there.
Well I'll tell you something about Akitas, they are sooooooooo loving. And smart, and so easy to train.
My Akita lets me do anything to him. I can kiss his nose, he even puts it up when I ask for a kiss I can lay on him when he's on the ground (I don't weight much and he's already 95 pounds and only 9 months old), I can pull on his lip when he's sleeping to check out his teeth, and he doesn't care. Just sleeps.
I was even told by my vet that he had never met a dog with such a great personality. And the vet's been around for a long time.
My Akita and my Shih-Tzu are the best of friends. I know that's odd, but my Akita loves little dogs. He's so well socialized with them, he would never hurt one.
The only problem I have with my Akita is when it comes to treats. He's fine with people around his treats, you can pet him, touch his face ever, but when it comes to another dog, watch out. He does not back down when it comes to food. My Shih-tzu knows to stay away when he's eatting but other dogs have gotten in the way. He never hurts them, he just lets them know that that treat is his. But to be on the safe side I now place him away from other dogs when he has a treat and no treats are aloud to be left lying around. He has to be treat monitored.
Oh, by the way my Akita's name is Kaede.
Kaede is also great with kids. I don't have any myself but he loves to say hi to kids and kiss them, he never barks at them when they walk in the door like he does other people. But I still will never try a food situation around a child. Better safe then sorry. And supervision always.
Akita's are also very bright. I had Kaede potty trained in 2 days. 2 DAYS. I could not believe it myself. He was asking to go outside. He was only 9 weeks when I got him too.
When I started leash training him it took about 10 minutes of him getting use to the leash, then we where off walking.
Akita's are also great gaurd dogs, they look very intimidating, but are really gental. I'm sure if your Akita sensed someone was dangerous he would do something, but most times Kaede just barks, then smells, barks again and then walks away, almost as if he's assessing the person.
I could go on all night about how great Akitas are, but I'll stop. Maybe this will get some more replys. Any questions about Akitas, I'm very knowledgable, I didn't get this breed just because.

As for wbink1500, they probably did not let you adopt the dog because alot of people think Akita's are vicious, dangerous around children, and can not be properly raised unless by someone familiar with the breed. Akitas as a breed are not very well known or familiar to alot of people.Their not very well understood. I do agree that you have to be ready for a challange with an akita, but there just like anyother dog, just alot bigger.

Default I feel better...

My bad experience at the sheltar put me back a bit on the process. I am adament about adopting from a sheltar as I do NOT believe in breeding. The Akita was my first choice because of my dog Betsy (Akita/Pit mix). I love her behavior and her mostly Akita qualities.

I agree with you about the treats and kids. My dogs favorite activity is going to the bus stop. She love children soooo much. However, adults are another issue. She is cautious and growls a lot (tail wagging). You are right! My dog always assesses the situation. She is the best guard dog I have ever seen and is always by my side when the doorbell rings. Betsy is my very best friend. I guess this bad situation and ignorance on the other person's part took me back. I don't know of another person who loves animals (all animals) as much as I do.

Thank you for responding. I feel better. Have a wonderful day with your dog.

wbink1500 If you are still searching for an Akita from a pound, I would suggest looking on www.petfinder.com
The other day I was searching on their just out of curiousity, and I found this Akita in Delta BC, Canada, that I am just absolutly in love with. His name is Kimo, he's 3 years old, and he's georgeous. I wrote to ask about him and it sounds like he has a lovely temperment. If I could get another dog right now, it would be him I would get. They say he would be better off an only dog, but opposite genders get along great, that I wouldn't worry about it.
If you are worried about airfare or anything, it's pretty cheap to fly a dog from Vancouver to anywhere in the states. It cost me $170 to fly my dog from Louisianna to Vancouver. I would say it's worth checking out dogs in other states and provinces, expecially if you want an Akita, their are ton's out their.
I'm so glad your interested in adopting an Akita. They are so misunderstood, it's good to see someone else who cares so much about them.

Default

hi i have just joined this site, i would like to tell every one my expereince with an AKITA. I own and love very dearly pomerainians who are small dogs and weigh maybe between 5 and 8 pounds . Last saturday evening the 7th december 06 myself and my partner were out walking my 3 dogs who were on leads. A large male Akita was out loose by it's self, with no owner in sight, it attacked and killed my male pom, I know very little about Akita's i only know what gets reported in the press about them. The dogs owner seems to think it's OK that his dog attacked mine as he might have thought he was a cat, it's also ok that the dog bite me , because he was trying to finish my dog off. I have been in touch with the police and i hope to persue this through the courts, I have also been in touch with the AKITA welfare and rescue in the UK, Their advise to me was persue it through the courts and they would recommend this dog be destroyed. I know all dog lovers love their dogs no one more than me, but please can someone explain to me why anyone would want to own a killer dog, My heart is broken, i had my dog for 8 yrs, i saw him being born, my last memories of my dog is of him being crushed between a monsters mouth. My other dogs are traumatised and don't want to go out. the Akita is still in my location in fact it lives back to back to me. I will never forget what happened that evening. So for all of you Akita Lovers who wonder why most people have a great mistrust and hatred of your dogs here is one example.

I have a similar story but I won't tell it. It's in the Akita breed. They are great dogs to their owners --and owners need to be responsible and know the dogs disposition. They are known to attack other dogs and sometimes strangers. They are great watchdogs. I am sorry to hear about the loss of your pom. That's tragic.

Hi I'm Ree and I have a two year old Akita Kujo that I rescued. He's the sweetest one I've ever owned, and I raised and bred them for 5yrs.While they are highly intelligent and lovable to their family they are not a dog for first time dog owners. They are very stubborn and can be aggressive if not properly trained and socialized and should always be watched around non-family members. They are however fantastic guard dogs, generally don't bark unless they feel a threat and in my opinion one of the most loyal breeds there are. However people need to know that the people that your Akita welcomes into your home when your there he most likely won't welcome when your not.My Akita is very non-aggressive when my husband is home but if he's not and you try to approach me he will let you know with a growl. However he will stop right away when his lead is tugged on and he's told "no".That's because I established the alpha role immediatly and he knows who's boss.I'm very educated on the breed so feel free to ask me any questions.

To Pom Lover,I'm so very sorry for the tragic loss of your fur babies. There is some info I'd like to give you on Akita's as a former breeder and current owner. They are NOT killer dogs. They are natural prey dogs and anyone who knows the breed will tell you that you never let your Akita roam free.I know you want to blame the dog but in all actuallity it's the owners fault. One for not watching his dog or keeping him properly confined and two for not properly training him.I would sue the owners and rather then putting him down for owner irresponsibility and natural instinct please see about getting in touch with an Akita rescue such as MidWEst Akitas.Blaming the dogs for problems with the owners training is how breed banning starts.I hoppe this makes you feel a little better but if not I hope it gives you some insite into the Akita breed and bad owners.Let me also add that gun control has been an issue in this country for a long time.Well it's not the gun that kills but the owner or person who shot the gun.How many people have killed other people and not been sentenced to death? You can't blame a dog for inproper training. It's not his fault. That person has no buisness owning an Akita.I've never had one thats attacked. Why?Their trained properly.I'm not at all trying to down playyour heartache I know I would be totaly devastated.I'm just trying to get you to see both sides. My prayers are with you and again I'm very sorry and hope your pain is eased in time.
