Wow, Not so many Akita lovers here is there.
Well I'll tell you something about Akitas, they are sooooooooo loving. And smart, and so easy to train.
My Akita lets me do anything to him. I can kiss his nose, he even puts it up when I ask for a kiss

I can lay on him when he's on the ground (I don't weight much and he's already 95 pounds and only 9 months old), I can pull on his lip when he's sleeping to check out his teeth, and he doesn't care. Just sleeps.
I was even told by my vet that he had never met a dog with such a great personality. And the vet's been around for a long time.
My Akita and my Shih-Tzu are the best of friends. I know that's odd, but my Akita loves little dogs. He's so well socialized with them, he would never hurt one.
The only problem I have with my Akita is when it comes to treats. He's fine with people around his treats, you can pet him, touch his face ever, but when it comes to another dog, watch out. He does not back down when it comes to food. My Shih-tzu knows to stay away when he's eatting but other dogs have gotten in the way. He never hurts them, he just lets them know that that treat is his. But to be on the safe side I now place him away from other dogs when he has a treat and no treats are aloud to be left lying around. He has to be treat monitored.
Oh, by the way my Akita's name is Kaede.
Kaede is also great with kids. I don't have any myself but he loves to say hi to kids and kiss them, he never barks at them when they walk in the door like he does other people. But I still will never try a food situation around a child. Better safe then sorry. And supervision always.
Akita's are also very bright. I had Kaede potty trained in 2 days. 2 DAYS. I could not believe it myself. He was asking to go outside. He was only 9 weeks when I got him too.
When I started leash training him it took about 10 minutes of him getting use to the leash, then we where off walking.
Akita's are also great gaurd dogs, they look very intimidating, but are really gental. I'm sure if your Akita sensed someone was dangerous he would do something, but most times Kaede just barks, then smells, barks again and then walks away, almost as if he's assessing the person.
I could go on all night about how great Akitas are, but I'll stop. Maybe this will get some more replys. Any questions about Akitas, I'm very knowledgable, I didn't get this breed just because.
As for wbink1500, they probably did not let you adopt the dog because alot of people think Akita's are vicious, dangerous around children, and can not be properly raised unless by someone familiar with the breed. Akitas as a breed are not very well known or familiar to alot of people.Their not very well understood. I do agree that you have to be ready for a challange with an akita, but there just like anyother dog, just alot bigger.
