Question What kind of dog (breeds)

Okay I ask this because the next time I get a dog I want one very similar to her.

Temperment wise and energy level.

She is very calm (most of the time) she does have a bit of a prey drive (I could do without that but its managable). She is a couch potato and a cuddle bug. She is very smart, a fast learner and she is a pleaser.

She is 24 pounds. (I don't want a dog larger than 30-35 or smaller than 15)

I just figure if I could identify her breeds that would give me an idea of dogs to look into that would be similar.

The rescue said she was a Jack Russell mix (the pound papers said Jack Russell Chihuahua she is too big for that)

We think she is either part Corgi or Basenji and Jack Russell (mom was a Jack Russell)

She is not much bigger than our minature poodle (just heavier)

Hmm this is a tough one. My first thought was corgi because of the face and ears. But the body and tail really remind me of a Shiba Inu or a Besenji. Both breeds are very smart breeds. Besenji's tend to be a little dog aggressive when meeting new dogs, but will be very loyal to the family pack. They are also very calm and quiet dogs. They actually dont bark. They might make a chirp kind of noise and a light howl, but I've never heard a besenji make either noise.

Here are some more of her puppy pictures

Here is a recent one

--------------------------------------------

I forgot to add she is more of a people dog than a dog dog. She is so submissive that most dogs gang up on her and she has gotten hurt because of that. She is good with our poodle and the other poodle she knows and the beagle she knows.

Thanks

Min pins and Besenji's are both "people" dogs. So its always possible.

As a side note, you can pick up a breed DNA test from petsmart (its like 60 bucks) and it will tell you what type of breeds are in your dogs DNA. Now I dont know how well they work, but just thought I'd share!

oh I know about the Dna tests and I think they are a waste of money. They just aren't that accurate (and they don't test for that many breeds) I just don't trust it

I figure when its more perfected I might do it

Yeah I'd never spend the 60 bucks on it haha. Someone suggested it for me since both my boxers are rescues and then I'd know if they are "pure" or not. I said "welp, they look like a boxer, the tails are docked, the dew claws are removed, and they act like a boxer....I dont need a piece of paper to prove it!" And this was coming from a woman who had a boxer from a "breeder" so wouldnt she know what a boxer looks like? lol

Don't go with Besengi and especially not Jack Russel Terrier if you want a couch potato its safer to am for a Corgi.

Yeah I am leaning toward a corgi or corgi mix (if I adopt from a rescue) next time. They have such a similar demeanor to Sasha. She is just basically exactly what we needed in a dog. As far as energy and temperment goes.

I'm just afraid it couldn't handle our 4 mile long walks every saturday and sunday. Like she does (we also do 45 minute walks usually twice a day but since winter we cut back to once a day most days)

(She luckily doesn't have the Jack energy, but mom was a Jack) I definately wouldn't go with a Jack.

I'm just trying to figure out what the best breed of dog for us would be. I mean I would want the dog to be good with other dogs but also a loving couch potato that can handle our long walks. Oh and not real nervous around kids (she is but i think thats because she hasn't been raised around them....we don't have kids and we don't know anyone with young kids. The youngest child she has been around is my 9 year old sister (we have a 14 year age gap between me and her I'm the oldest) when my husband and I (and the dogs) went to visit my father

Like Sasha.

It's so hard to tell sometimes, but she reminds me of many Rat Terrier mixes I've seen.

Corgi's are herding dogs. A healthy, sound Corgi of either variety should have no trouble at all with a 4 mile hike. They need a lot of exercise. They can be pretty active if they aren't getting enough exercise. They're a working breed. Personally, I think you'd do better with a Cardigan rather than a Pembroke. The Cardigans seem to have a more even temperament, are more laid back, and are less likely to be ankle biters.

If you want a calm dog, stay away from Basenjis. They're very active, as a general rule. And while they don't bark, they do have a wide variety of vocalizations, and some can be quite noisy.

One breed you might consider, that pretty much meets all your requirements, as a standard Longhaired Dachshund. Laid back, lovely temperaments, athletic enough to handle that 4 mile hike, but not hyper or over active, smart, easy to train, and they have a hysterically funny personality. They really like people, and are happy to curl up with you and snooze while you watch TV. They were bred to hunt in packs, so they usually get along well with other dogs.

They're usually good with children, too, and sturdy enough to play with older kids. My only concern would be with toddlers, who might injure the dog by falling on it, although my first standard did really well with both of my kids when they were babies and toddlers. Both of them learned to walk by grabbing Ralph's collar, and he'd walk them all over the house.

i don't really care for dachshunds at all.

I wanted to add....one of my dogs biggest problems is she is so fearful. I don't know if its just her or what. I mean we are having a problem right now with being fearful yet territorial around the apartments.

It seems like you can get her so far in training and socialization and one small thing will set her back to the beginning. So I don't know about that. We adopted her when she was around 11 or 12 weeks old. (Her mom, her and her sister we dumped and they found them behind a dumpster) They were taken to the pound and Mom was put down and the pups were about to be when the rescue came in and got them and thank goodness because aside from the nervousness and barking she is the best dog in the world and I am blessed to have her.

By the way she is extremely strong for her small size.....but from what I understand that is the Jack in her

Could she be a feist?

The description fits

Here is the link to the description

United Kennel Club: Treeing Feist

They are pretty common here in the south

Here is a link to some pictures of feists

I was wondering if you had found out what mix your dog was I have been searching to find out about our new rescue dog. I came accross this post and was suprised. Our Bailey looks quite a bit like your dog and sounds like the temperment is close also. We had thought basenji/JRT mix. She hopps when she runs like a JTR but over all is not very hyper. When we go for walks she wears out fast so if we go to long she just wants to lay down.
