Question German Shepherds and Siberian Huskies

What can you tell me about German Shepherds and Siberian huskies.

What is the best type of family/environment for them?

What kind of owner do they need?

How are they with other dogs?

Can they be trusted off leash?

How much exercise per day do they need?

How are they to train? Are most eager to learn?

Which is the better family dog?

How do they compare in strength?

Thanks

What can you tell me about German Shepherds and Siberian huskies.

What is the best type of family/environment for them? An active family. They need lots of exercise and lots of mental stimulation

What kind of owner do they need? An active owner but also an owner that can devote daily training

How are they with other dogs? Good, both breeds are very pack oriented

Can they be trusted off leash? With lots of training, yes. Though I would not recommend it. Both breeds have a very high prey drive and will dart after anything that moves. A fenced in yard would be a must and NO electric fences. Both breeds would learn to jump the fence and take the shock to go after something they want

How much exercise per day do they need? At least a good hour brisk walk. They are not lazy dogs

How are they to train? Are most eager to learn? Very easy. Both breeds are increadibly smart and are eager to learn. They are both a working breed so they thrive on pleasing their owners. They both do really good in things like agility classes

Which is the better family dog? Both are really good with families.

How do they compare in strength? Both breeds are very strong. Huskies are built to pull a sled that can weigh around 1,000 pounds. GSD's are built to take down a grown man by just the arm, its why they are the most common police dog

As a thought, there are a TON of Huskies in rescues. Mainly because people get them as a cute fuzzy puppy and then have NO idea how hyper and strong they are, so they dump them.

Thanks. I am just wanting to expand my knowledge on the breeds.

I've read so much on them but I've never really had any interaction with them or talked with anyone who had.

I love to learn about different breeds

I would check into either a reputable breeder or a good rescue that might let you come and visit with the adult dogs so that you can see how you interact with them. Of course puppies are always going to be cute, but its best to spend time with an adult.

I love GSDs. So did my dad. When I was an infant, we had a GSD named Ringo. When my mother went to church, dad would babysit--well, really, Ringo babysat. As long as Ringo was with me, I was a happy baby--put Ringo outside and I'd stream bloody murder.

When I was in third grade, we got another GSD we named Heidi. Great dog. I actually helped my dad obedience train her. She was as tall as I was but would walk at heel for me. I remember working on off-leash recalls--she was very focused and obedient. She also loved to stalk squirrels. And, I do mean STALK. She actually caught one once!

Just came across this today (and darn--now I've joined another dog forum---that makes #4 (actually I should get rid of one as it is very boring!) This site tells about each breed and what kind of dog you should get --think there is a little quiz to help determine what breed would be good for you, etc.
