Default would my 5 month akita puppy kill my cats?

Hi,
Could anyone tell me if my 5 month old akita bitch will kill my cats. She has caught one but i pulled her off quick! But i am scared she may kiill them.

I also have two other dogs, a small terrier (Ziggy. male) and a cross mastiff Molly (female). My akita (Mika) bitch is fine with Ziggy the male dog but has attacked Molly! I am wondering if this is just a phase or is this how she is going to be forever? I am greatful for any advice thnx.

Its a phase ONLY if you take the right steps to train her out of it now.

Is she enrolled in puppy class? Akita's are very sweet dogs, but pretty hard headed dogs. Plus they have a high prey drive, and small cats and dogs can be seen as prey.

If she starts that up, immediately put her in a time out. Put her in a kennel or in a room by herself. Play time STOPS when she gets out of control, period.

Hi,
Thanks for you advice. I have not got her in classes but will do so. Do you think she would hurt my other female dog Molly? I am a bit weary about putting them in the garden together.

I dont want to sound harsh in my post, but..............did you do much research on the breed before you got an Akita?

If you researched you would know that it is very possible for an Akita to be inclined to hunt and kill smaller animals, and that they dont usually tolerate other dogs in their home of the same sex.

You may be able to temper some of this behaviour with clever and patient training, but I would ALWAYS er on the side of caution with her.

Wilst in saying that Im not saying it is a hopless case, however you really should have been prepared for this possibility right from the start and should have begun heavy sociallisation and training of tolerance from the moment she came into a home with other animals, if for nothing else but the fact that she is going to be so much bigger and stronger than them all.

Yea, that particular breed isnt very suited for other animals in the home.

You can give it a try, let them interact but with you watching. Give it some time, see how it works out.

If it turns out bad, then you'll just have to decide

I'm sure with alot of hard work, things could work out. I have a Siberian Husky and 4 cats... I would never leave them alone tho, i think my dog is fine with the cats but you can never be to sure. I hope things work out x

I can tell you when I bred my Akita's I had to elderly women who lived across the street from me and had more cats then I could count...All were allowed to roam free and were constantly on the top of my fence while my 5 Akita's were outside....Well my one female Suai(pronounced Su-I) figured out how to get up on her hind legs and hit the fence with her two front paws until the cat fell in...Needless to say I found dead cats in my yard on numerous occasions....The other issue is that the females tend to be more animal aggressive and at times have a higher prey drive...

This is not to say that they won't live together peacefully...Sometimes you get lucky especially when the puppy has been raised with the cat from a very young age howvever I would never leave the two of them alone because you can't predict how your Akita would react if your cat did something your Akita did not like.
