If you have not had a dog before I would not get a Malamute. They are a stong, dominant breed that require an experienced owner and a lot of training. They also require a ton of regular grooming.
Labrador Retriever info:
+ Friendly, easily trained, medium/large size, active, short hair (still require regular brushing about 3-4 times a week)
- Many, Many bad breeders out there since they are so popular, many health problems.
Here are some MUSTS when looking for a lab breeder:
~ Should be amember of at least one national or local breed club (ex: Labrador Retriever club of America)
~ Both the parents of your puppy MUST have all their health clearances and be at least 2 years old. Remember anybody can say they have the clearances so make sure they show you all ther certificates. The clearances required for labs are: OFA hips (excellent, good, or fair), OFA elbows (normal), CERF (done within the year and showing no eye disease or abnormalities), Optigen, OFA cardiac (normal). No clearances? RUN AWAY! You do not want to get a puppy whos parents are unhealthy - a health certificate from a vet is NOT an ok to breed.
~ Parents should be champions, pointed (almost champions) or titled in performance events and should meet the breed standars (you can visit AKC.org to read the breed standard)
Please feel free to PM me if you have any other questions, I hear so many horror stories from people who got dogs from petshops, puppy mills, and uneducated backyard breeders I am always happy to help.
