My guess for the smaller dog is hound/border collie maybe some terrier and for the larger dog shepherd and collie possibly. They make a DNA test you can buy online that will tell you your dogs breed. If you google 'dog breed dna test kit' you will find it.

For training I would recommend petsmart or talk to other dog owners who's dogs are well behaved and find out where they had their dog trained. Be careful of traiers who take your dog, I could not send my dog away for training as you don't know if they are beating or hurting them.

Regarding yoru questions about dog food, I hope this helps.

Studies have shown that poor diet is one of the leading causes of hot spots, dry skin, excessive shedding, ear infections, skin infections, cancer, diabetes and other health problems. Diet effects overall health, condition of skin & coat, body condition and longevity! Below is a list of common dog foods ranked from Best (5 stars) to worst (1 star) based on quality of ingredients and nutrition. When choosing a dog food make sure to read the ingredients and select a food which does NOT contain any of the following: Corn, wheat, soy, meat or animal by-products, artificial colors, artificial flavors and preservatives. ** The FDA defines meat by products as follows: Ground up hooves, hides, beaks, entrails, diseased and disabled carcasses, cancerous animal tissue and blood soaked saw dust from the floor of slaughterhouses. Often the grain in 1 – 3 star foods is soy meal and others condemned for human consumption due to rancidity, mold, debris, bacteria – ground corn cobs, peanut hulls (very high in pesticide residue) ALL NUTRITIONAL WASTE.

See post below for food ratings...

I would recommend choosing one of the 5 star foods but if none of them are available in your area the 4 star foods are ok.

5 Star Foods:
Artemis
Blue Buffalo
Canidae
Fromm
Innova
James Well Beloved (UK)
Merrick
Nature’s Variety Prairie
Solid Gold
Timberwolf Organics

4 Star Foods:
Avoderm
By Nature
C & P Organix/Ultramix
California Natural
Eagle Pack Holistic
Natural Balance
Spots Stew
Wellness

The 3 star foods are alright, not good but not horrible and if they are all you can find or afford it is not going to kill your dog but I would still not recommend them.

3 Star Foods:
Chicken Soup for the dog lover’s soul
Diamond Natural’s
Dog Whisperer Brand
Drs. Foster & Smith
Kirkland Signature (Costo brand)
Nature’s Recipe
Nutro Ultra Holistic

You want to stay far away from all of the follow foods - DO NOT FEED THEM!

2 Star Foods:
Authority
Bil-Jac
Blue Seal/Brandon Farms
Eagle Pack
Eukanuba
Natural Life
Nature’s Best (Science Diet)
Nutro Natural Choice/Max
Pro Plan
Rachael Ray Nutrish
Royal Canin
Royal Canin Veterinary diets
Sensible Choice
Wysong

1 Star Foods:
Alpo
Beneful
Diamond
Goodlife Recipe
Hill’s Prescription Diet
Iams
Iams Veterinary Diet
Kibbles N Bits
Pedigree
Pet Promise
Purina Chow
Purina ONE
Purina Veterinary Diets
Science Diet
Whole Meals

Rachel Ray makes lousy dog food? Who knew? I don't think it's available in Canada; at least I've never seen it in my local pet food store.

I was shocked when I saw it... but I have to say like many celebs who have products most likely she has never even seen the food much less read the ingredients or else I am sure she would make changes to make it healthy for dogs.

I give this list to all my clients to help educate them about feeding better pet food

Thanks so much for posting that list. There are bad foods on it that I would never have suspected and would have bought with confidence!
