I love terriers just because they're so much fun to be with. However, I love dogs period so, I don't think I could just single out one type. They all have their own unique and wonderful qualities!

LOL I am the same way. I set up the poll then thought about it and had a hard time picking just one group. I am partial to Greyhounds and GSD's and they are not in the same group. Boy it was a tough decision.

It is tough for me to choose between the sporting and the working but I guess I enjoy watching the working more because of their vast variations and really interesting histories.

I love my big lazy saint bernards. I have no clue why they are in the working dog group. They don't do anything.

I agree. I love watching the shows to learn more about all the different breeds, but sporting and working usually have more interesting dogs (no offense meant!! )

I'll take the herding group. My favorites of the herding group are; Australian Shepherds, Collies, Shetland Sheepdogs and German Shepherds. I grew up with hard working Aussies and have owned mixes of the other breeds mentioned. I have also very much enjoyed training my friends Collie bitch. She is such an entertaining and smart pupil.
I've had a few departures from the herding group over the years too, with Poodles, Lhasa Apsos who are very charming loving dogs, and an Elk Hound. And my most current a Husky/GSD/Wolf, who was a rescue that was dumped in my town, to fend for herself.

I voted for toy dogs. I have a Maltese who I absolutely adore. I'd also really like a Chinese Crested or maybe a Papillon someday.

Can someone explain what non-sporting means? I never understood that title. It's like each group had their specialty while non-sporting in the opposite of what you are?...Did they just not know what to group them under & made an umbrella category?

A rolled up newspaper can be an effective training tool when used properly. For instance, use the rolled-up newspaper if your dog chews up something inappropriate or has a housebreaking accident. Bring the dog over to the destroyed object (or mess), then take the rolled-up newspaper and hit yourself over the head as you repeat the phrase,"I FORGOT TO WATCH MY DOG, I FORGOT TO WATCH MY DOG!"

Here in the UK our groups are different:
Gundog
Hound
Pastoral
Terrier
Toy
Utility
Working
The Utility seems to be the same as Non Sporting:
This group consists of miscellaneous breeds of dog mainly of a non-sporting origin, including the Bulldog, Dalmatian, Japanese Akita and Poodle.
The name "Utility" basically means fitness for a purpose and this group consists of an extremely mixed and varied bunch, most breeds having been selectively bred to perform a specific function not included in the sporting and working categories. Some of the breeds listed in the group are the oldest documented breeds of dog in the world.

Now I'm more confused then ever. Actually they seem the same. Although the Akita is considered working here. I forget, does the UK separate the American & Japanese?
The Non sporting do seem to be the most varied. The UK's choice of using the name Utility makes more sense to me verse Non-Sporting. Non-Sporting just sounds more excluding then including which is what throws me.

I don't know if they make that distinction.
I think "working" is an odd title - because that is what so many of the other breeds do - you get working dogs in all the groups!

I love to have a sporty dog and a working dog. They are playful and fun to be with. I really enjoyed spending time with them.
