You may have to wait until he grows up a little bit to tell what he is. I used to have a dog that was part german shepherd and part wolf that looked like him. How old is your puppy?

okay i am guessing maybe siberian husky or do they have all their hair at an early age?
However, its not a good idea to have them tied up where they can get either under your car or by it, for several reasons. a the dog can ingest anything that drips off your car and lands in mud puddles and b if you back up and she is laying under the car you may not see her. also dont tie to stairs or she or he could hang itself. Good luck with your new pup she is a cutie.

If that puppy is really only four weeks old, it is way too young to be taken away from its mother!

I will quote you from a home vet handbook I have: The 1st 12 wks. of life are extremely important and determine, to a great extent, a puppy's personality and sociability. Recent studies show that puppies go through a series of developmental stages. The successful negotiation of each stage is essential to avoiding future problems such as timidity, fear-biting, phobias and dominance aggression.
Separating puppies from their mothers and littermates too soon has been found to have adverse effects on a puppy's weight and physical condition. During the period between 3 and 8 wks. of age, puppies are receptive to and greatly influenced by interactions with their dams (mothers), littermates and other dogs on the premises. These interactions enable the puppy to develop self-awareness and adopt appropriate dog behavior.
SUCESSFUL INTERACTIONS ARE THOSE THAT BUILD CONFIDENCE, ARE NONSTRESSFUL AND DO NOT FRIGHTEN THE PUPPY. The ability to get along with dogs later in life is due, in part, to a smooth transition through this 3 to 8 wk. stage. THUS, PUPPIES SHOULD REMAIN WITH THEIR DAMS (MOTHERS) AND LITTERMATES UNTIL THEY ARE 8 TO 10 WEEKS OF AGE AND ARE FULLY WEANED AND EATING PUPPY FOOD. unquote. Also the mother's milk helps give protection from some diseases.

Re: What Dog Breed ?
You have gotten some good replies to your question so far; I would hope you are going to bring the puppy to a Vet for shots & advice, plus he may tell you the age & possible breed. Where did the person who gave you the dog say he/she found it ? If they know the mother dog, that may be a clue. However, (in my personal opinion !) the Mixed Breeds often are the best for health, temperament & uniqueness ! We have 7 rescues & everyone is a different breed...! and we love them all...just like children, all with different personalities ! Lots of luck with your cute puppy. ( I hope you can keep it inside & not on that chain )

in actuality, weaning is a 2 step process. Far too many assume that once a pup is no longer nursing it is weaned. This could not be further from the truth. The second stage of the weaning process is the interaction between littermates and the dam that take place after the nursing has discontinued. Bite inhibition is taught, interaction with littermates that teach proper behavior when around other dogs is taught. This stage can and generally carries a pup into 12 weeks of total time before they are ready to leave. The term weaning originally meant the period of time that an offspring would stay with its mother. In different animals it is different lengths of time. It in no way was defined as when a young animal was no longer nursing off its mother. My pups do not leave til 12 weeks and all are healthy, mentally and physically. They have no to very little problem in adjusting to new homes and the natural socialization gained with the littermates offers them an easy adjustment to homes with existing dogs. The whole concept of letting a puppy go before at least 8 weeks whether it is nursing or not is simply stupid and the result of someone who is ignorant of dogs in general.
