Papillon
I have had my papillon for about a year and a half. The pet store I bought him from gave me a lot of misleading info, I had not done my research on the breed before I bought him. Let me know if you own or have owned one, or anything you know about the breed. thanks!!

Why do people keep buying puppies from pet stores???
This needs to be repeated. People think that by buying a dog from a pet store, they are "rescuing it". However, every dog bought from a pet store just feeds the puppy mill industry. You often get a puppy with a lot of "issues" and the mother of that puppy is condemned to breed yet again until she no longer can at which point she is killed one way or another. She lives her entire life in terrible conditions.
I'm not surprised that you got bad information. Pet stores are in the business of selling dogs. Most will tell you ANYTHING to get you to pull out your plastic and take that puppy home.

I don't regret at all buying my puppy from the pet store, he bring me so much joy and is a loyal friend. My intention was to give him love and care and I know that he has a great home with me and is happy. As for the misleading information I recieved from the store, I guess we all live and learn and I will know better next time to do more research. Yogi, your puppies are very cute! I don't know anyone else who owns a papillon, any advice you would give me would be great. Mr Green, thank you for taking the time to post the links!

Papillons or as originally named "Continental Toy Spaniel" are verly lively and athletic dogs. These little ones are very intelligent and excellent in agility.
Can be notorious protectors and very good guard dogs. In most case are very "velcro" once they bond and prefer to be with you at all times. They generally do not do well unless they are in attendance when guests are over and prefer to go with you where ever you go. Bred for companionship, this trait of needing to be with their owner is very high on their priority list, which sometimes can be a little bit of a pain, ie: underfoot.
I have included pics of another of the litters and Quinn, Lucy and Whisper.
From left to right. Quinn is the sire and Whisper is the dam.

It is important to note that though in the US these are known under the name Papillon which is taken from the French word "butterfly" as the ear and fringe when they reach maturity resembles a butterfly wing, there is also the Phalene. The Phalene is categorized in the US under Papillon but in Europe it is a separate breed. Phalene in French is "moth" and the name is given to Papillons who's ear do not stand erect. They are slightly lower, thus the name Phalene, moth. Unless you know what to look for, most do not know there is a difference. I personally would not trade mine for anything, but then again, I would not trade my 13 Miniature Pinschers, 2 Italian Greyhounds or my German Pinscher either....so I guess this is not saying much...lol

A friend of mine owns a Pap from the showpaps breeder linked above. She has a lot of info on the breed and videos of her dogs on her website. She is a devotee so she may also be a good resource - here's her website:

I love my dog, no matter where he came from. A pet store, a shelter, off the side of the road...its would not matter to me. My intent was to buy him so that I could love and take care of him, and that is what I am doing.

Of course you don't regret getting your dog, and i hope he brings you years and years of joy, but i agree w/Laura's mom about buying from pet stores. Years ago, i bought my chihuahua from a backyard breeder, and (again not surprising) also got a lot of bad information. Despite where he came from, Rocket turned out to be the most amazing dog in the world, and if i could go back in time, i'd do it all over again. But will i buy from a backyard breeder again? No way!
