| Adopted dog...anyone know what breeds he is?
Hi everyone, this is my dog Freddie. We adopted him a few months ago. The adoption people said he's an Australian cattle dog/hound mix, but our vet doesn't seem to think so. If anyone has any thoughts on what breeds he might be, I'd appreciate it. |

I'm not an expert by any means but, I see pit bull and boxer. There are people who are much better at this than I am. Wait for some other opinions!

The reason for the cattle dog is due to the patch work coat which is most common in the cattle dog. The broad jaw and head do indicate possible Pit Bull Terrier.

| No expert here either, but I do have a breeds book with colored pics. From what my book shows---The head is identical in coloring and I think shape as well to the Australian Cattle Dog! The pic I have has exact same markings on face--black patch and all! Actually the body has me stumped.
An Australian Cattle Dog has coarse hair and I will quote on the description: Tough, medium sized dog, bred for hard work. There are 2 coat colors: speckled blue, with tan or black markings, or speckled red , with dark red markings. Must be another mix in there with the black and white coat that appears to be smooth and not rough like the Australian Cattle Dog. The only 2 in my book that have this would be the Dalmation or the Great Dane--and to me that looks a little far out but?? How much does this dog weigh? Can you show more pics--side view and a standing view--feet included? Are the feet round with well-arched toes and nails that are either white or the same color as the spots? Description of the Dalmation: lean, clean lines of the Pointer, to which it may be related. It is well muscled and has a short, hard, dense coat of pure white with well-defined, black or liver-coated spots randomly splashed over it. And the feet description just above is also for the Dalmation. |

Looks like my old jack russell.
But hey,I'm no expert. I could be wrong. You might want to check with a pet store but I would think a vet's assessment is most reliable. Does the vet know his breed. Btw, I know it's off topiv but I can't resist. His really cute.

| Still Thinking Dalmation/Australian Cattle Dog! After seeing more pics--I'm still more convinced that there is some Dalmation there---the build is right, the color is right and the feet seem to fit. I also think there might be some Australian Cattle Dog there too. The Dalmation has more defined color markings but if part Australian Cattle Dog--these markings could be speckled instead of well-defined. The shape of the head might be a little wide for these 2 breeds, but, lol, who is to say that there is not some of another breed involved too!
You did not mention the height or the weight? Dalmation: weight=male-50 to 65# and female-45 to 60#---Height (from the shoulder) both male and female-19 to 23"
Australian Cattle Dog: weight=male-32 to 35# and female-30 to 35#---Height (from the shoulder) male-17 to 20" and female-17 to 19" |

Thanks for all the help. I did tell the vet that he was listed as an Australian cattle dog/hound mix...but she didn't think that was it. But, she did say that time would tell...she will get a better idea when he's full grown. He is cute isn't he. I fell in love with him when I first saw his picture. |
